Model 29-3 Classic Hunter 6" with silhoutte front sight - 1987 Lew Horton PICS ADDED

Did a little horse trading today at the big 3-Day Phoenix Gun show.

One of my acquisitions is a Lew Horton special run Model 29-3 Classic Hunter 6" with silhouette front sight.

Had not known about this particular piece until today, apparently it was part of a one year limited run of 5,000 guns but I am still looking for the information in the catalog.

Found this bit of information on the interweb.....

"Lew Horton Special run Smith & Wesson Model 29-3 44 Magnum revolver, The Classic Hunter, made one year only in 1987, in a limited edition of just 5,000. This has the high polish blue finish, 6-shot unfluted cylinder, 6-inch full lug barrel, target hammer and target trigger, Hogue rubber combat grips, and a 4-position silhouette front sight. Product code 101230"

Anyone else own one??

It's from my understanding that some may have been made in 87 and some in 88 thats depending on when the order was filled.... I believe they were all ordered in 87...it is one of my favorite model 29's and should have one some time next week .... I'll post her up.

I will be taking the rubbers off, I feel like she needs a good set of targets...

Did yours come with a box ? A special order # could provide a date sir.

One sold recently for $1,300 with box/papers......

Looks like approx. 5000 were produced, so should we assume they were ALL for Lew Horton??

I do not have the box, papers or factory letter on mine.
 
I have one with box, docs, and two end labels. :confused:

My late shooting buddy purchased it new.

A contest was held in "Shooting Times" magazine (IIRC) for a name and "Classic Hunter" was the winner.

Excellent gun. The original grips are butt ugly but they fit my hand nicely. The adjustable 4-step front sight is a neat innovation.

I am pretty sure I have a set of smooth Targets around that might look pretty nice on this one......
 
Very nice find. Great hunting / range revolver. I own a 6" 629 Classic Hunter that came with the standard ramp front sight (poor pic below). It has taken a number of deer, and is a favorite hunting revolver.

Great guns Larry!!

I also own the .41 Magnum 657 Classic Hunter that was made in 1991 that is an awesome range and hunting sidearm.....it has the standard sights as well, like yours.
 
How durable are these, could anyone speculate?
I know these dont have the endurance upgrades but I was under the impression that dash 3s and higher are very well strong ??? I have seen a couple of "2E" .44 mag variants, but never a "3E"...

I personally don't own one but I've got a buddy that I hunted with for years that bought one new in 1988. He carries it hunting as a companion to his 1894 Marlin .44.

Interesting. That looks like a stainless steel version (629) that they produced later instead of the original blued version.

Wow that there is purdy.... that's a model 29? In hard chrome? How has she held up over the years? What's your round count and preferred bullet/size? And who makes the grips sir?
 
Threedflyer , some of my LH's came with a post card sized flyer from LH . Some didn't even have that . You can call CS with your SN# , and they can tell you if you have a LH .
