Forum Beginnings Question?

Well, I'm sure the older members remember well the March 14th night of the long knives-it was ugly indeed. But it most definitely made it clear the direction the forum would take and established who was in charge.
To paraphrase the great Walter Sobchak
This is not Nam.
This is the forum
There ARE rules.

And for all the fun and education; some of us, myself included, have over the years learned every rule the hard way, eh Caj!

Huh! I didn’t realize Houston Rick has been with us so long. Great! :)

I vaguely recall “the night of the long knives” that Cajunlawyer mentions, but details have long since been auto-purged. I always thought Parabellum ran a fair show. I imagine he might have been a bit taxed trying to manage both forums. I believe when the change took place he bid us fairwell with the thought that a real S&W man should be at the helm. We certainly have that now, and I don’t know how we could have got a better one. MANY THANKS to Lee (and his gang), and I hope anyone who is able will consider becoming a contributor.

How did this forum ever survive before I got here?

Many good people here have encouraged me through hard times. I have found good firearms advice...that is actually accurate. And there's humor that occasionally makes even this old curmudgeon smile.

Keep up the good work. We appreciate it.

Just pretend this is witty.

i lurked for several (many?) months before I joined and I think I only joined because a gun was offered for sale that I thought I wanted. l don't think I bought it, though, and don't remember why.

Yes, this is a great forum.

There's no decent Firearms Forums in Australia that deal with handguns. There once was an Australian IPSC forum that was pretty good until it got shutdown after being hacked and then information used to do two Home Invasions where the crooks were looking for firearms. I now believe it's more secure now and only specific IPSC members allowed on it.

... there were a few squabbles that ended up with people missing.

You mean like "Fido went to live on a farm" or Chile in the 70s missing? Can't imagine those kinds of squabbles here -- at least before the introduction of The Lock.

Bob... that’s exactly how I joined. Well, not exactly. I bought the guns. Someone was offering a 29 and a 57 and I scraped together my money and my courage and made the deal. All went well, but yes, I spent probably at least a year “lurking” before the pressure became too intense and I had to join. :D

I was looking for info on a 422 for sale locally. One joker of a poster wrote on another forum that the 422-3 was the only reliable model 422 made....all of the other 422 dash models were junk......Soooo, my first question here was what was the dash model differences on the 422? Proud to say the members here let me down gently from that question (LOL).

What a great informative forum.....recently learned ketchup is taboo on hot dogs.....who'd a thunk it?:D

When a daddy forum and a mommy forum really love each other, they get real close and before you know it penguins have thumbs..

Long Ago...

So the oldest post from me that still remains is dated 8/29/07. I was a moderator on this forum when Parabellum was admin, maybe the owner. When I was big into this forum, I was working with guys like Parabellum, SmithNut, and rburg. The forum currently has my join date as 1/23/01. I believe that to be correct as I vaguely remember joining just after the birth of my first daughter.

I almost forgot...

...to mention Victor Louis. I couldn't remember his username. I remembered him as "that forum member I met at a gun show in Tyler, TX or AZ (Phoenix or Tucson).

I also wonder what happened to the "ILIF Log?" Right after S&W started adding the Integrated Lock, we started a post to log all "Integrated Lock Induced Failures" (ILIF). The information wasn't very reliable and the topic spun out of control and became unmanageable. It's probably best that it is gone.

2004 I was down in Moore Haven Fl fishing when one of my buddies needed $500 for a set of tires. He offered me a 27-2 5" in presentation case for $500. I knew little about S&Ws at the time, only owning a mod 36 3" rb, which I love and still have. I joined forum to get info about mod 27. Blew up my mailbox. Bet I got 10 emails/pms offering to be #2 if I passed. All that unsolicited interest did was cause me to buy it, hell if everybody else wants it I do too. I've still got it and about a half dozen more 5" N frames.

Forum is full of a bunch of enablers. :) How many times have you seen a guy trying to decide between 2 guns, invariably by the 3rd post someone tells him he needs to buy them both. Guilty as charged. :D

Great place and I've made many good real life friends with people I first met here.

First time I met Burg was about 15-18 years ago at NGD. I was looking ar a S&W and Dick was standing there. I mentioned serial # and he recited year of mfg from memory. Impressed hell out of me.

Handejector used to set up at NGD but then he wised up and concentrated on high definition pictures and exhaustive descriptions to sell on GB plus having a name/reputation for integrity that comes from years in the business. And the guns were too high end for most of the Louisville crowd. I understand Tulsa is different. Going to a show you have to travel to is an expensive proposition. Tulsa is near $200 per table, 5 days time 3 or 4 nights on the road, you're looking at a big nut to crack before you make any walkin money and it's a hell of a lot of grunt work.

Same with me. Think I joined about 2004 or so. Used my real name then. Later after a move I resumed membership as Old 44 Guy & Lee notified me after I sent so money I didn't have to pay anymore. At advanced age, alone, & bored The Forum is my salvation most evenings. I miss some old friends here that are gone but am finding new ones .By the way Lee, my check is in the mail.

If memory serves, a lot of the earlier members were recruited from an even older forum called shooters? Miss SmithNut and hope he is doing okay. He has/had an amazing collection of S&W revolvers, with alot of posted pics.
