You know actually survival or emergency type situation?
On on of those internet blurbs they were advertising the new ********, first folding knife with a useable cord handle. Has a 4' piece of cord that can be detached for survival type situations. Common on some survival fixed blade knives, but folders supposedly the first.
Has anybody ever actually needed or used cord from a knife handle?

I have ..... not for survival or an emergency .... it was just the most convenient way to tie a "tag" to a deer that I had killed a few years back. I usually have a cord in my pack, but on this occasion I didn't, so I used the cord I keep on my hunting knife.

I like a loop of paracord looped in my small knife handles.
Have some right now in the small Bark River on my side table.
Have used it like it for all kinds of things, but didn't actually get it from my knife handle.
Some folks advocate paracord bracelets.
Don't have any of those either.

I never wanted to unwrap or unbraid the funny paracord bracelets! I carry a "hank" of heavy cotton cord or 330 paracord (550 is too bulky!) In every coat and jacket I own. They start out 10' long and are discarded when down to 6'.

I have never gotten myself in a true survival situation, but in real everyday life, work, and camping I go through 3 or 4 a year! My biggest problem is I only know about 6 or 8 knots! I also carry 1/2 roll of electrical tape in my coats too (but not dress coats). Since I'm semi retired, coming up with uses for the first half is becoming harder to find.

My youngest son (now 35) was helping move his now wife move a couch from her parents row house. No one knows how it got upstairs, but it wasn't coming down the staircase! The big old open out window was large enough for the couch to fit through, but her parents didn't have anything larger than embroidery thread!

No problem; a 50 foot piece of Duct tape twisted into about a 45 foot rope! He lowered the couch out the window! Her dad, mom, and grandmother were so impressed, every visitor to their home for 2 years got shown the rope Josh made! It is so satisfying to know that your kids listened to all those little things you taught them, but they still rolled their eyes at! (that is normally the job of "Really Cool" uncles! at least how my kids train their kids, Uncle Mike, Josh, or Joe show them "neat stuff while camping! Uncle Judah teaches them computer skills!)

The kind of folks who would think to wrap their knife handle in para cord to make sure they have some para cord......
.... are the kind of folks who think to put some para cord in their pack in case they need it.

Plus they wrap their water bottle with lots and lots of Duct tape which can be made into anything imaginable!:D

(Black of course as it is tactical):D

Its funny this thread.
I teach a military survival school in the wilderness.
I have a few hundred feet of cordage in varying thickness in my pack. I have a lighter in my pocket wrapped with T-Rex duct tape.
I am whatever the opposite of gear junkie is.
I work with guys who look like REI sales reps or Outdoor Research testing department. I spend my night warm and dry, and I spend my fun money on guns and ammo, rather than a garage full of fancy sleeping bags.

No, and haven't had to unlace my paracord bracelet either. Took a tip from my son, who's active duty Army. Roll up 4 or 5 feet, put it in a cargo pocket. That way, it's ready to go. No need fumbling around trying to unwrap it.

The funny thing about those emergency situations is that you don’t know when or where they’ll show up.
I don’t always carry a pack with that kind of stuff in it.

Pack's in the truck, 2.9" Benchmade North Fork knife, and AAA flashlight in my pockets...... Squidsix's 6915 and a spare 15rd mag on my belt!

After taking an ALICE course last year have been putting 15" of 750 paracord in my coat/vest pocket.

Sounds like we'll need an instructional pocket dump thread for Spring!

Need to do some playing around but added a couple of real carabiners to the pack and a neat little NiteIze CamJam Alum. cord tightener/tie down.

The pack has stuff to start fires, Life straw water bottles, extra batteries, wool socks, change of cloths, rain gear, 6" boots, ammo, Ka-bar Mk1 repro deck knife,.......... energy bars.............................50ft of 750 paracord, roll of Gorilla tape, zip ties and ?????????????

Ya time to to do a pack dump......

I never understood the appeal of Randall’s Model 18 - Attack Survival model as the hollow handle for storage seemed kinda gimmicky and the smooth steel handle seemed way too slippery.

But a couple of years ago I learned that the handle was made to be wrapped with fishing line or other strong cordage or combinations thereof useful in a survival situation. That would make for a good, non-slip handle, and would be useful, I think, for a military or bush pilot.

I don’t own a Model 18, and doubt I will buy one, but it now does hold that Walter Mitty appeal for me....
