Bear eats hiker in Smoky Mtns

I feel bad for the hiker and his family, but I couldn't help think of this Far Side cartoon...

Some say best bear gun is 25acp. You knee cap you buddy with it and keep on truckin.

I read an article some time back where the National Park Service addressed this old joke. In their judgement, if this actually happened the shooter would be guilty of murder.

Sorry, tried to find it, but my googlefoo is weak.

When my granddaughter was little we started having black bears back in area. Big news on tv and papers. Talk of the town. We had GD for weekend and were going to be in woods. The night before I told her a story about a little girl the bears got and only thing found was her pink dress. Following day we were walking down old dirt road on way to pick plums. First thing we ran into was a pink dress laying in middle of road. It was tractor rag material but GD went nuts. No plum picking that day.

My wife feeds the deer here every summer. We get lots of does with their fawns and by putting out some grain they will stay out of our apple trees. This year we have been over run by black bears. We have had two different sows with twin cubs and two boars.
We have been on the same property for over 40 years and never seen a bear here at our place until late July. We don't live too far from town but if you head east from our house it is over 100 miles between our road and the one at Lake Wenatchee with nothing but mountains and trees between us.
I asked our local game warden what was going on and he said it had to do with the exploding raccoon population. We have always had a problem with the raccoons here but this year we have seen them almost everyday. The 1st of September I started solving the raccoon problem, I have solved it over 20 times in the last two weeks and the bears are no longer with us.
I'm temped to put the deer feeders back up but I think we will have to wait until next year. We do miss seeing the deer but the picture below is a nice boar 20 feet from our bedroom window.

When I was a kid my folks would take vacations in the Smoky's a few times.

Back then they had a lot of pull offs from the road near creeks and stuff with picnic tables set up. More than once we had to take off and leave most of our food due to bear cubs walking up to us.

If the cubs were there, mama wasn't far behind.
