Help Removing Hogue Monogrip

Have 17-4 with Hogue Monogrip that I would like to remove. Screw comes out off butt nicely, but grip still super tight to gun. Is there a trick to getting them off short of trying to wedge knife in and probably scar nice bluing? Thanks for any help. Sam

Put it straight down off the grip. Think male/female joining.

It comes off by pulling down as noted but may also take rotating the grip slightly backward at the top. If it is really stuck oiling the area where it contacts the grip frame may help.

Can you slip a bank card, i.e., ATM, or credit card between the frame and the grip? I have a Hogue K-frame boot grip that holds on without a screw. I have to wedge a credit card between the frame and grip to remove it.

Is there a way you could spray some silicone spray down along the surface of the grip/frame meeting and then work it around with slight twisting? Other thing would maybe some time in the sun (we do that to get tight bicycle tires off and on) or maybe a good heating with a hair dryer?

Hogue grips remind me of the “Cooking a Carp” recipe.

Season the carp well, place between two bricks, roast in hot coals for about 25-30 minutes; remove from coals, throw away the Carp, eat the bricks.

Get them off your gun, put them in the trash with the fish...they both stink.

And yes, I carry every day, and shoot often...just don’t care for Hogue grips, that’s why they make so many different ones.

Use credit cards. Then when you get them off use one of the credit cards and buy a proper pair of wood grips!

Oh my word, I bought a nice 4" 28-2 some years ago that was wearing a set of Pachs. I removed the grip hardware but for the life of me couldn't figure out why the grip remained secure. Yep, you guessed it. Took some strategic whittling but it did come off without damaging the frame. I'm surprised the prior owner didnt engrave his SSN on it somewhere, too.

I usually try swearing in these instances. Profusely. Then, maybe a little oil like Ballistol or something else that won't melt rubber or plastics. Then swear some more.

Gun in well padded vise.....

Tap the top of the grip back and down with a wood peg and a mallet.

I guess the Hogue monogrip absorbs the hand-numbing recoil of the .22 Long Rifle cartridge.

Ah yes... the southern recipe!

Out West, we splay the fish open, season to taste, tack it in place flesh side down on a nice piece of redwood board, broil in oven until done, carefully scrape from board, and..............etc.

Hence the name monogrip, it becomes one with the gun.
