I have a model 66-2 6" Mfg.-1988. Acording to S&W it left the factory as a 6" gun with RR Front, WO Rear and .146 sight blade height. The issue is S&W cannot provide me with the actual length from the eye piece to the screw hole on my gun. I ordered a used sight assembly from Numrich which i thought according to information on the internet was the correct sight leaf. The screw hole was 1-15/16" from the eyepiece on the sight leaf i had ordered, however unless Numrich measured it incorrectly, it was not the correct sight leaf for this particular gun. Any information would be of help as there is conflicting info regarding these 66-2 rear sight leaf lengths. The serial is AJT1995.

It looks like 1.80'' from center to center of mounting holes to me.

1 15/16'' is 1.9375''

See below :

One sight is 1.70'' between centers
Next one is comparison of 1.70'' 1.80'' between centers
Model 66-2 distance between centers 1.80'' ( Caliper is off slightly cause I was trying to take picture with one hand )

My rear sight blade is .146'' tall

The one i purchased from Numrich was to short to reach the screw hole correctly. So I'm evidently needing a slightly longer version of sight leaf. This has been a pain without the factory information to go off of. I need to measure the top strap.

I never noticed that there are two different lengths of rear sight leaf for K frames. I measured my M66-1 from the front of the frame sight notch to the front end of the leaf. it measures 2.620". From the notch to the screw center is 1.905". The sight blade is around 2.713" from the end of the leaf.

The 3 K-frames are, from L-R, M66-1, M48-4, M19-3

The difference in length of sight is by barrel length. The 66 has a 2 1/2'' barrel so the sight goes all the way to the end of the frame. The problem I believe the OP is having is distance between screw centers. That's how you measure the sight to find out what you need. Then the difference in overall length by barrel length.

The picture I posted above is a model 66-2 with a 6'' barrel. See how the sight doesn't go all the way to the end of the frame.

Yes, I think the exact measurement on your 6" is the proper length i need (1.80"). Its clear as mud trying to navigate used sights for it. Simple fix turned headache:eek:

So its pouring rain here at the moment and i cannot reach my caliper. However, with my measurements by tape, the remnant I have of the original sight leaf has the front screw center at a 1/2 inch from the end of the sight leaf measured from the barrel end.

What happened to the original sight?

When I acquired the gun it was missing. I assume somehow it was broken off. I have seen them dropped and damaged before. There is no other damage on the gun though. Everything else is good, minus the sight assembly. I guess it is possible it snagged on something and snapped the sight leaf, as they are spring like steel.

Last year I bought a new model 66 snub nose. I do not like adjustable sights. There is a company that makes a fixed sight for this revolver. I bought it, had it installed, and am much happier. You could look up the company and put a fixed rear sight on the gun.

There are several companies that make (or used to make) aftermarket replacement sights for adjustable sighted S&Ws. You have the same problems with hole spacing, though... you have to get the right one.

OP, I wonder if maybe the previous owner removed the original sight to mount a scope, then kept the scope when he sold the gun. That might explain the missing sight with lack of damage.

Top Picture
You will need the proper sight body with hole spacing of 1.80'' with a total length of 2.75'' for the 6'' barrel. Also an elevation nut that goes into slot in back of frame and screw to mount body to frame.

Bottom Picture
You will need the 1.46'' tall sight blade or some call it a sight slide or sight leaf along with windage nut, screw, plunger and plunger spring
