ANGELS
Do you believe in them? Do you have one? The subject has fascinated me for years. I suppose it's good to think that maybe they are watching over us but I've never been able to accept the idea. Not completely.
What happened to me the other day has got me thinking more and more about this. Still, I can't say that I believe guardian angels exist but neither can I explain what happened. What ever the case I was totally unprepared for it and it has had a profound effect on me. Perhaps it's just a little reminder that, despite all the meanness, cruelty and hatred in the world today there are still some people out there that have kind hearts and compassion and for others and will help when they can.
I was in a big-box grocery store. It was crowded. Shelves were bare. It took me about 45 minutes or so to get through the whole list. Check out lines were long and moving slow. It seemed everyone had totally full shopping carts. The occasional price check, declined credit card, etc kept movement to a snails pace.
I had about $130.00 worth of items. I put my chip-card in the reader. Declined. Several tries later and still no luck. I had just used this card at CVS So I knew it was good. The checker tried and it still wouldn't work. I tried every credit and debit card in my wallet....Declined. The last time I was in this store the same thing happened. I finally got my card to scan that time but it took a while and many tries.
At this point things were looking pretty bad. After 45 minutes of shopping and 15 minutes of trying to get a card...any card to work I knew I was in a bad spot. 30 dollars in my wallet and $130.00 worth of groceries bagged up and sitting in a shopping cart. I was getting lots of angry looks and grumbling from the growing line of people behind me.
Then I hear a small voice from a short distance away, "I can help." I looked around and there was a young lady that had just checked out at the next register. She had a small boy in the child seat of the shopping cart. "I don't think I have enough to cover everything but I'll give you what I have."
Now, along with total frustration I went into brain lock.I just couldn't process what I was hearing.
She starts whipping out money and it turned out to be $90.00. She handed it to the checker. I handed over my $30.00. I had to put a few things back but for the most part the situation was saved.
Out in the parking lot as I was loading my groceries in the car I saw her across the aisle doing the same thing. I walked over to her. I asked here where to send the check she had coming. She gave me a warm smile and just shook her head. I thought she was just reluctant to give me her name and address. I told her that my bank was right across the street and that she could follow me over there or just wait here and I'll bring it back. I told her she couldn't leave without letting me repay her. Again the warm smile and slow head shake.
She wasn't going to let me pay her back. No no no. I think I began to stammer my protest. She told me that some one had given her a helping hand when she really needed it. She wanted to pay it forward. Her concern and sincerity were strikingly obvious.
PAY IT FORWARD Think about it. Now that I have been the recipient of it I'm thinking about it. A lot.
She extended her hand and told me her name was Victoria. I told her my name was Jack. I took a quick peek to see if I could see any wings on her back. I wouldn't have been surprised it there had been. After a long warm hand shake she turned and put her little boy in the car seat, Got in her car and drove away.
Now I'm standing there with my face hanging out. What just happened?!?! If this had been an older person it would have been a lot more believable. Most young people are struggling to pay their bills and keep body and soul together. But this young lady was maybe 25. Her car was a 5 year old Honda. She was modestly dressed and gave no indication of being wealthy. Just a very kind and thoughtful person.
These days tensions are high and everyone is feeling a lot of stress and frustration with all the Covid stuff and now the problems from the cold and snow. And here comes this young lady from no where to save me. I just can't get this out of my mind. It wouldn't happen in a million years. Not these days. But still...it happened to me.
I still don't know if there are guardian angels or not. I don't suppose I ever will. If there aren't then this was just a kind person helping out a fellow human being that needed it. But if there are then I have met mine and her name is Victoria.
