Try to buy a handgun without a permission slip.

Remember that clearly, was stationed there on and off for 17 years. Every time I wanted to look at handguns had to have the Sheriff's permission. Being stationed in Calif. for three years was a bit better as long as you could put up with the waiting period. Pa. was better. But was very glad to be back home in Florida!

Amen to that, Brother!

I think NC has fairly progressive handgun laws. Get a concealed carry permit, and you have no waiting period to buy a handgun, or limits on how many. The NC permit is recognized in all states that allow concealed carry, and the state is a "shall issue" state. Whether the bill gets passed or not, the mere introduction of it is a step in the right direction, given the overall national climate.

North Carolina's Permit requirement

Is straight up Jim Crow designed to prevent whomever the Sheriff deems an undesirable from buying a handgun. And also to line the pockets of the county. For years, the hotshot bigtime sheriff of my county charged 20.00 per permit and would only issue one per request. Even though the cost MANDATED BY STATE LAW was set at 5.00 per.
The former attorney general, now Governor also deemed a C&R FFL ineligible to recieve a qualifying handgun shipped to the FFL's door without a county pistol purchase permit. How crooked is that? Makes me ashamed of my home state. Thank God a CHL negates these rquirements.

I agree that the permit too purchase a pistol is a bummer but I've never heard of anyone being prosecuted if they had a pistol that had been bought without a permit.
One thing we don't have is a law against a loaded gun in a car. It's legal to have a loaded short or long gun in a vehicle as long as it's not concealed 24/7 every day of the year. Take it all the way around this State is pretty gun friendly. Larry

Here in Florida we can conceal a loaded gun in a vehicle without a permit. Take that!

16 states now permit less concealed carry for any American citizen citizen without a criminal record and 2 more, Wyoming and N Dakota that allow its residents the same right. Does your state have citizens initiatives. We install a couple new initiatives every election cycle. Usually to tell the legislators no or allow the people to do something.

If I want to buy a gun it is none of the sheriffs business. If a Leo in Montana asked to look at the gun in my car I would be well within my rights to just say no. Unless there is something criminal going on in plain sight the interior of my car is off limits. Again it is none of his business if it is loaded or not. He has not more business looking to see if my gun is loaded than look in my wallet to see if I have a Trojan. I can not believe what some people allow your states to do.

Usually it is folks that moved into the state trying to do things "like we did that back home" that screws things up. My family moved to Florida when the Spanish still owned it, probably was pretty nice then ...rough but nice. Has been changing ever since. Sometimes not for te best. When people would tell my Mother "that is not the way we do things back home", she would tell them "then go back home, because this is the way we do it here". Guess more folks ought to do that.

I left North Carolina in 1982 to take a job in Florida. After being here a short while I thought I had died and gone to heaven. I do not plan to return to the Old North State. Most of the things people complain about in NC are the political preferences given to elected officials like the county Sheriffs setting fees for handgun permits. This comes from the days when NC had a one party system.

What if I don’t have a concealed weapons license or permit?
In Florida you can have a concealed firearm in your vehicle without a permit as long as it is not readily accessible or if it is “securely encased.” Securely encased is defined by Florida Statute 790.001(17) to include a glove compartment, whether locked or not locked; snapped in a holster; in a gun case, whether or not locked; in a zippered gun case or in a closed box or container which requires a lid or cover to be opened for access. So long as it is securely encased, it is legal for you to carry the gun in your car, although not on your person. The other part of the law talks about “readily accessible for immediate use.” If it is close enough to you that it can be retrieved and used as easily and quickly as if carried on the person then it is readily accessible. That is defined by Florida Statute 790.001(16). The classic example of readily accessible is when the gun is under the seat you are sitting in.

Looks to me like a lot of restrictions on having a gun in your car. In NC it doesn't have to be "securely encased" and it can be "readily accessible" and it can be on your person. If the gun is out in open where it is easily seen it's legal. Other than a purchase permit NC is gun friendly. Larry
