For the record, I’m the guy that never finds the ‘great deal.’ Well, my luck changed today when I ran into a nice 6” 629-1 at a LGS, price tag said $599.99. I had to look twice, as I thought that I looked at it wrong and maybe there was a “1” in front of the “5.” Ha! The price was indeed $599.99... Just the gun, no box/docs. Based on what I’ve been seeing, it’s pretty fair price. Around here, they seem to go $1,200 and up.
I’m ashamed to admit it, but I almost passed on it. Wasn’t really looking for one, but have thought about getting a 629 at some point. So, I quickly came to my senses and decided to buy it.
Gun is in pretty nice shape, locks up tight, no end shake, etc. It doesn’t appear to have been fired too much. The checkering on the stocks is still sharp, but there are a couple of rub marks in the poly, and it has some minor handling marks, as stainless guns tend to collect. All in all pretty nice shape, and it should clean up well.
I’ve got two excellent condition (LNIB) 4” 29-2s, one blue, one nickel. Too pretty to shoot... My shooter .44 mags are Rugers, one blued Redhawk, and a SS Super Blackhawk. So, I’ll have a nice Smith .44 mag to shoot/hunt with, I’m excited about that!
Here’s a few pictures I took while it was sitting at the cash register counter. Kind of a “as it happened” look into my day. I didn’t actually leave with the gun because the gun store was so busy, I would have had to wait a couple of hours in line to do the paperwork, etc. I asked if they could just pull the gun and hold it for me, with a deposit, until I could come back when they weren’t so busy. Didn’t like not being able to walk out with it, but I’m impatient when it comes to waiting in lines!
The only reason I went into this gun store today is because of a cancelled gun show. Glad that show was canceled!!
