Stihl chainsaws

I own a 194 and would not buy it again. My mistake, not Stihl’s. For some reason I expected it to keep up with my old 020AVSEQ. I suspect the 201 might do that, but not the 194. If I use it on anything larger than 3-inches or so, I have to turn the patience-meter up several clicks. It’s a good saw for what it is, but I couldn’t describe it as a workhorse like the 020. Spend the extra bucks and get a 201. I’ll bet you won’t regret it.

Really? I wouldn’t think a four or five CC’s would make that big of a difference between the 194 and 201. I was mainly wondering if the M Tronic was worth it.

I'm running a 029 Super Farm Boss and a MS201C. Both start every time on the 2nd or 3rd pull. Both run like raped apes. Both do everything I need for felling trees and trim work. The Stihl MS201TC (Top Handle) would be a great choice for what you need.

I've had a chain saw since the middle '50's. Many Macs & 9ne Homelite., it was a ***. About 1995 I bought a12" Echo for limbing off the tractor keeping the roads open & clearing brush. I ran the socks off that little thing. Don't know how many bars & chains I put on it the 26 years I had it. It quit last Feb & needed a new carb. 170 bucks to fix. So I bought a new Steil . Sure hope it gives me the same service.

My uncle has had the same Stihl saw for 30 plus years, when I was working for a tree crew we beat the hell out of them 40 plus hours a week for years. Saws from the smaller spectrum up to 440 magnums. Only issue we ever had was a muffler coming loose once. I’m sure you’ll get your money and years worth of service out of it.

Nice saws!

When in the firewood biz I ran Husqvarna 2100’s there 100 cc. I have three, one is ported. I have from 18”/42” bars, I ran 404” chain. I have around 100 saws I bought used to rebuild some and sell some. My cutters were 385 Xp, 575 xp, 570, 372xp, 266 Xp, 240sg has heated handles. The g means generator for the heated handles. I raced the 2100 with a 16” bar the rakers set at .080” at the local fair speed cutting. I did 8 cuts in 17.5 seconds. I was working in the woods logging when the fairs came along. I was in the best shap of my life back then.

Sorry to hear that, just like our guns there is always one that is better or worse in the production line. My 194 is my go to saw on my property for everything up to 6 inches and it cuts like butter....but I do keep my chain sharpened which makes a huge difference.

Nice saws!

Thank you.....somewhere in the safe there are a couple more:D.

Found them.....my 150, which is the best one handed, in the tree saw ever, a 193 and my mighty 391 when I had to fell an old pecan and sycamore.

I don't always drink beer but when I don't and feeling manly I drag out this old Mac! lol

Disclaimer: I too use Stihl but I did rebuild and resurrect this 60 year old Mac this winter just for something to do. Last time I used it was 30 years ago, my dad's neighbor gave it to him when I was 15. I'm 66 now! It weighs a ton.

Lots of cutting around this rural subdivision all year. Seems like the only saws we see are Stihl and Husqvarna. Both great. I own a 16" Husky, and 20" Stihl.:)

The 194’s strong point is its lightweight. If you need a lightweight, compact saw and you’re not using it every day, it’s a good choice and saves you ~$300 - which can always go into the gun account for the next time you see a nice S&W. When I bought the 194 I was looking for the most lightweight saw I could find, that I had any confidence in, for a particular job. It did/does OK. I would just say if you will use it a lot, my choice would be the 201.

My Tree Guys recommended the Sthil Electrics for smaller stuff. I call them when my wife gets anxious about me tackling trees she thinks are too big for me. Keeping chains sharp are important on any of them. Sold on Sthil products. Just bought a battery powered headge shear for her to use around gardens. Lightweight and do a good job. Comes with two size blades.

A dull chain does no good for the saw or the operator! You gotta keep them sharp! Besides bar oil, and a few gallons of pre-mix high octane gasoline, I always take my files with me. I touch up the chain as soon as I stop seeing good size pieces of wood being discharged. Along with a set of files, I also take along extra plugs, plug wrenches, extra chains, plenty of bar oil, a stump vise, wedges, a mallet, first aid kit, and PPE with me when I'm heading out for the day.
