Still No Relief With Ammo

As I said, I don’t think this one is going to end. Best we can hope for, and not for at least another year, is the ammo comes back at at least double the cost before pandemic. I think the prices are going to stabilize somewhat eventually due to people not being able to afford it anymore. I think the new normal will be $25-$30 a box for 9MM plinking ammo. I think primers will eventually be $75-$80 a brick, and the reloading industry will eventually be gone altogether. The winds have shifted against us.

I’m seeing way more ammo on the shelves now, with 9mm ball steadily trending down, below 19 bucks in most of my haunts. .223 and 7.62x39 has been plentiful for months, and .308 is everywhere as long as it is marked 7.62x51 which many folks don’t seem to recognize.

As long as the prospect of no more grungy steel-cased Russky ammo doesn’t rally the Chicken Little army to start buying again we will return to normal.

Well, here in gun friendly NE PA, the ammo shops near me have grossly inflated plinking ammo, and absolutely no reloading components. I have no big box stores near me and I’m not going to drive 90 minutes unless I know for sure they have it and I can never know that.

I started reloading in 2013 and shot more than ever last year(8000 rounds) and still have a couple year supply due to being well stocked before this all started. Primers have been showing up at local retailers on a regular basis. I bought primers at Sportsmans Warehouse in June and July for around $45 per thousand. Scheels has had them on their shelves for over a week at a time in the $80 range. It's getting better.

A week ago Sunday I helped a friend buy 1k of 9mm blazer from Grab-A-Gun for $399.

Thanks to current events last Sunday’s price was $549.

I started reloading in 2013 also. I have never had a problem getting components. Not one primer to be seen. No powder. Try to order bullets and it's months long backlog, although that might have gotten better in the last few months because I haven't looked.

Best case, it's regional, because nowhere near me in NE PA, and even Orange County, NY, has primers. The one place that did a few months back was charging $250 per brick. I won't ever shop there again.

I think the current political situation has caused a number of people to begin or continue stockpiling so I think that supplies will be short for longer than anticipated. Today’s prices may be cheap tomorrow.

Fake shortages are becoming a marketing strategy in our country (IMHO of course). I would think that the suppliers know that 2 years is a minimum time to run the shortage; but this may be increasing depending upon our spending addictions.

I always advise that the consumer must vote with his feet and run away from buying. It's the only way to control supply and demand. I know it hurts, but lets be tough with these people. I like to turn the old saying around: When the going gets tough, the tough get going. So let's get going far away from the sellers.
And let's REMEMBER who they are.

"Voting with our feet" wouldn't be a bad strategy if we could count on others to do the same. But we can't.

It would also require there to be no national event like Sandy Hook, etc. I wouldn't take that bet.

It also would require no more boneheaded political stunts. But we're watching one unfold right now.

I'm stockpiling those $75 and $100 primers when I can until I get to my comfort zone. I'm a long ways away, given my belief that availability and price aren't coming back. Any other belief is courting disaster unless a person has a lifetime supply on hand.

Until / unless there is a significant change in the upper levels of elected federal government such this are likely to continue to happen. When you are confronted by a government that wants to restrict your rights "stocking up" is prudent and reasonable. Market disruptions will occur.

The fuel on this fire is the HUGE number of new firearm buyers that doesn't seem to slow down and many if not most want ammo at almost any price so they can try their new toy. That certainly won't do much to lower prices for now - IMO.

Don't forget, all these "new" gun owners don't know that ammo prices are high. They think what they're paying is the norm. The ammo companies don't have an incentive to lower the price.

Just stopped at nearby Big 5.
The get ammo on Tuesday and had a fair amount.
No 380.
I bought a 150 round box of Winchester 9mm, $50.
The Clerk said the stores cost just went up, again.
This weeks ammo was a little higher than last week.

Haven’t seen one box of ammo of any kind in Walmart in months.

A lot of Walmarts quit selling ammo altogether.

'Round cheer (north Georgia), in the June / July timeframe, things seemed to be getting better. I was able to find most calibers I use (except .44 Special) fairly easily, and prices were coming down. In the last week or so, supplies are much less and prices have gone back up. I suspect the recently announced ban on Russian ammo and the resulting ammo run we expected is already happening.

Ok, the Walmart in Fleming Island , Fl. had Winchester 22 RF but not for me as last batch bought had several no fires. Also had 22.250, 7.62 ball some 350??? whatever that is and several kinds of shotgun shells.

I have plenty and reload what I need. Been there seen this before and was not going to run lean and get caught without. I hit the gun stores around here often as well as Rural King once in a while. Things are a lot better than they were but not close to normal. I think it will end but it will be another year or so it looks like.
