Need help with Model 28 value.

1st. of all you have a really NICE 4" 28. Wish I had 1. Do have a 6" no dash shipped 1960. Have correct era Diamond Magna stocks, and Diamond Targets. I am not a magna fan. One that I like on my 28, are Herrett Targets. Work for me. Whatever you do, hang on to the original stocks.

Happy traders = always a win-win

Congrats on a fine as-new 28-2. I just sold the one pic'd below to another Forum Member a few weeks ago for $750 so I'd say you did swell. You valued your 1911 at $850, he wanted it and traded for the 28-2 which you are happy with.

I agree..........couldn't be better when everyone is happy.....the real, true, definition of "fair market value".

It has a very tight lock up, no play in the cylinder front to back, and the grips appear to have been taken off and set aside early on as they are in excellent shape.

My only other Smith revolver is a 44 mag 6" Model 29 with Target grips and it's a blast to shoot, hardly any recoil. However, these skinny Magna grips seem like they aren't going to be so pleasant... but they look good.

I have a similar 28-2 4".

It came with the Magnas, but it has a pair of Targets on it now (I still have the Magnas)

It is much nicer to shoot with the Targets on it

PS - Nice gun

I hardly ever shoot a Smith with Magna stocks!! Unless it is someone elses gun, and I'm only shooting a few mild rounds. I have small hands and put Hogues on all my shooting guns, usually rubber ones. However, I have a set of wood Hogues on my 3 1/2 .357 Magnum from 1953 that work pretty well and look much better than the black rubber ones. The Magna stocks are just not shootable for me.

Congratulations on obtaining a very nice Model 28. GOOD TRADE

I made virtually that same trade (my 1911 was a Ruger). The M28 is in excellent condition with no box. I'm still very happy with the revolver and have never regretted the trade. I think it was fair both ways.

Not sure you can use both phrases in the same sentence :D:D. If you think the M29 has "hardly any recoil", then you'll not even be able to tell when the M28 goes off, except for the "bang".

He can't be too bright if he traded off his father's gun. Honor his father by shooting and enjoying the gun. Someday he may realize that he was an idiot and wish he had it back.
Like has already been said, 1911's are all over the place, but M28's aren't made any more. Much as I like 1911's, I sure wouldn't trade a nice S&W revolver for one.

LOL, I'll tell you, I don't know how but the M29 with the Target grips isn't bad, and I was "concerned". Now, I had a Browning B-92 lever action in 44mag, that thing kicked like a mule. I only put 5 rounds through it and it left my arm purple. The steel butt plate didn't help.

Thanks for all the help guys, without the speedy replies this could have gotten away from me. I didn't know what I was looking at and am thankful the 28-2 now lives with me. Much appreciation!

I'm going to try out a T-grip style adapter with the magna grips... I just have to decide on brass or black.

Model 28

You did very well!!!! That's a fine model 28 in beautiful condition. The original grips are VERY nice. Hope you got to keep the very nice Pachmayrs also. I second the BK Grip Adapter. I have several and the fit is great plus they have 4 copper tabs instead of the Tyler 2 tabs to hold in place. I hope to add a 6 inch to my collection at some point. Here is my 4 screw with Ahrends.

Thanks! Do you know what size Tyler T grip I would need? Are there other manufacturers of similar style grip adapters that are recommended?
As CH4 stated, Tyler #4. But given the current problems and prices regarding tyler, I'd go with BK until I located a tyler. Dont get me wrong, BK's are good, I just prefer metal over BK, Mershon, Pachs, S&W, etc. If BK, with their dual-clip design and customer service were using metal, they'd blow tyler away.
Meantime, pics and range report when you get to it.

Just be advised Tyler has verrrrrrrry slow delivery times. 6-8 mos is not unusual.
Check fleabay.

I was originally looking at the brass Tyler grips but I do not want to wait up to 6 months for them so I'm looking at BK now.

BK has "black" and "irregular black". I'm assuming "black"
is what I need for the more matte finish on the 28-2?

Does anyone have pics of BK grips on a 28-2 or any N frame with magnas? or could possibly point me towards a pic thread of BK grips if one exists?

Thanks

3 years ago I bought an excellent 28-2 4" in a local gun shop for $425. I sold it a few months later for $750. I've forgotten what I did with the money but I haven't forgotten the gun. I'd have to spend at least $100 more than I sold it for to get it back, which is twice what I paid for it. I miss it.

Here is one of my 28-2's with the original grips. And the other with not original targets.
