Was at one of our local Walmarts (we have four in the area) for some items and did the usual sporting goods walk through. Couldn't believe my eyes at the gun counter - like a miracle. The ammo case was nearly full. Lots of .22LR (Winchester SuperX, Federal Bulk, CCI Standard Vel and Stingers, and some new high priced Winchester 22lr I had never seen). Shotgun shells in various guages and hunting rounds for rifles mostly Winchester brand. Deer season begins soon here in SW Va.

Hard to resist but didn't buy any as I have enough .22, don't own a shotgun and don't hunt but a good sign that perhaps Winchester is making more that the demand.

Later stopped by the Sportsmans Warehouse and shelves were bare except some high priced .223.

I was in the Chattanooga Sortsmans Warehouse last Saturday and they had a huge selection of most popular calibers. Prices were higher than pre-pandemic but not nearly what I’d been seeing.
I didn’t pay a lot of attention because I reload but did notice Winchester range ammo was $19 a box.

They had several powders but no primers. I’m seeing a good variety of powders now at regular retail prices but still no primers other than mail order.

Gun prices were anywhere from a good discount to a high of retail. I didn’t notice any inflated prices on guns. I bought a very hard to find new Colt Cobra at retail as a birthday gift to myself.

Since I had an excuse, birthday coming, I went up to Smoky Mountain Guns and Ammo and bought a new S&W M&P 15-22 rifle. With the red dot they were getting $409 which was a pretty good discount. SMGA had a good selection of firearms again at good discount prices. They also had tons of ammo that was flying off the shelves. I didn’t check prices but a good 80% of customers were there to get ammo.

Buds Guns is a block from SMGA but had had enough for the weekend and didn’t stop in.

Seems like things are moving the right direction.

I’m an old guy and been through this shortage and inflated price deal several times. Prices probably won’t come all the way down to pre-pandemic prices due to increased labor and transportation costs and inflation in general.

An old guys advice, when prices get down to a more reasonable level, buy, buy, buy everything you can afford. Stockpile! This isn’t anything new and it’ll happen again.

I have enough primers, powder and billets plus loaded ammo to last quite a few years but I’m still buying when the price is right and I’m planning on buying more when prices drop.

Walmarts around here have gotten rid of all their guns I didn’t think that would happen, but I guess the liability is just too great. Ammo cases are nearly empty but academy and cabelas have lots of ammo except for .380.

Walmart has been my go to for 22. They have the best price and will have loads of it usually around the first of the month. I got a range bucket for only 60 a couple weeks ago. Heck cheaper than dirt is “selling” those for a kings ransom. Also if you have an academy near by periodically check their website. They usually have a real time track of what they have and I was able to run by and grab 400 spp. Granted they were 6.99 a box but it beats not being able to load or buying from scalpers.

Driving to Ft Payne, Alabama on Monday to visit my brother and thought I would stop along the way and check things out. If I recall correctly the last time I drove that route there was a Cabelas and a Bass Pro-Shop in Bristol. One on Va. side and other on Tenn side along I-81. Passing by Knoxville and Chattanooga also.

Thanks for the information!

I used to be in The tri cities every week but rarely get there now. If you’re coming down I-81 Buds and SMGA are off I40-75 at the Sevierville exit. They’re about 4 or 5 miles down on the right. Buds is off the road and almost behind SMGA. SMGA is in the basement of that huge knife store.

Sportsman’s Warehouse is off I 75 at the Chattanooga airport exit behind the burger king. It’s the 1st exit off the ramp headed to the airport.

I have a business partner from Fort Payne. Also used to do catalog work for Heil, garbage trucks, there. Nice little town.

Also passed on bulk 22 at Walmart.
It was Federal and I have a bunch.
Recently have bought Bulk CCI 22.
CCI seems to be moving into interesting packaging, like Plastic Bottles?
Did buy a 500 round box Win 9mm at Cabelas.
No Joy on 380.
Cabela's had Blazer Aluminum Case 45 ACP.
$1 a ROUND!
So is ammo going back up?
Tell me it ain’t so!

I picked up 3 boxes of Federal Automatch 325 rounds at Walmart yesterday for about $21 apiece. Could have bought more, probably should have but I've got a decent stockpile of 22 and thought I'd leave some for the other shooters. No limits on purchases too.

GT Distributors in JAX has 380 defense ammo, $24 / 20, lots of assorted 9mm, 40, 223/5.56, and quite a lot of LEO / Service member restricted ammo, 308, 338 Mag and 5.56 along with 9 mm.
Academy Sports has less selection but lots of 223/5.56 and 9 mm.

Rural King had stacks of 9mm for $19.00/box. Had other stuff, too. Their 22 ammo is very high but they got it.

Academy had quite a bit of ammo last week and the week before.Between those 2 weeks I picked up a thousand rounds of 380. It cost me a little less that 50 cents a round. It was store brand, brass cases, made in Serbia. I don't have a problem with that as I like PPU and they were so marked on the case head. They also had it in steel cases but that stuff was made in Russia.

I haven't seen a single round of .22 at any of the local Walmarts near me since early 2020.

I avoid Walmart like the plague, but LGS's here in MA/RI all seem to be well stocked with ammo. I see .22LR from $5.99 a box (Norma) to $12.99 (Stingers). Down from the pandemic high is .38 Special which can be had for $39.99/50 (Blazer). Hard to find are .32ACP and .380 but they do turn up occasionally.

I haven't checked my local Walmart for ammo for over a year . I can find all the ammo I need at other places . It's not worth the trouble of dealing with WM .

You're lucky! Our local WM in this area isn't selling ammo of any kind any more. Dick's (which I hate with a passion) has moved all their ammo and hunting supplies to their Field and Stream store where the closest one is 31 miles away. That's two more sources that have dried up in the last year.

Bristol VA Cabela's is closed and consolidated
with Bristol TN Bass Pro. Ammo available in
most places but expensive.

50rds 45ACP is around $60.

Went to the local WM on Friday and got some WW 5's and a box of Remington 4's. They also had some WW 6's in the retro box.
