I have no musical ability at all. When my son was in college, I bought him an Alvarez acoustical guitar, because I told him he would be more likely to make music for his kids with a guitar than with the tenor sax he played.

Now I saw this list of the best guitarists of all time, and thought I'd throw it out there to see what you aficionados think. Who does not belong and who's missing.

Chuck Berry and Neil Young ? No doubt, both made their marks and had major success. Chuck was ahead of the curve in giving people something that didn't even know they wanted until they heard it . . . but great guitar players ? Not even. Rolling Stone doesn't have a lot of credibility with a lot of their "lists". Personally, I think it's a joke Neil Young is even on the list, but ranked above Les Paul, James Burton, and Carlos Santana ?!?! Commercial success doesn't make one great at anything - "best" is wildly subjective at best and such lists and articles are only designed to gin up controversy and are the equivalent of online 'clik bait' to pull in readers. I can think of quite a few that objectively would be on such a list before many of those listed based on different measures of 'best'. But it garnered attention and controversy so the article/list was a 'success'. Fluid definitons based on fickle and unqualifiable opinion and personal preferences.

Because it's Rolling Stone's list the implication must be "rock" guitarists.

Otherwise Glen Campbell and Roy Clark would "have" to be on the list. As it is Glen played plenty of R&R as a guitarist for the Beach Boys back in the day. Roy could play any style and was an under-rated virtuoso.

And I think Jeff Beck should be higher than #5. He's numero uno in my book. I also think Stevie Ray should be a little higher on the list. No idea what Neil Young is doing on the list at all - political decision.

You will never find agreement on the list, except for the fact that most all lists rate Jimi as #1. Here are three more lists and the rating lists online are endless.

1. Jimi Hendrix
2. Jimmy Page
3. Eddie Van Halen
4. Slash
5. Eric Clapton
6. Stevie Ray Vaughan
7. David Gilmour
8. Angus Young

I think they're confusing "guitar player" with "songwriter" in some cases. Neil Young, Townshend, and Keith Richards come to mind.

Clapton may be a bit too high. SRV is easily better.
Not sure if Duane was the best player in the Allman's.

I don't have a "list" but some of the higher ups would be:

SRV
Eric Johnson
Lindsey Buckingham
Jeff "Skunk" Baxter
Brad Paisley
