Had one when I was younger and more broke. Traded it in on whatever gun of the day I was interested in at the time. My regret list from that era is pretty long.
I don't love my 625 JM but I shoot it occasionally. It pulls bullets and locks up the cylinder. I fixed that with bullets made for a roll crimp and a roll crimp die. I can load lots of 45 ACP for my 1911 using a taper crimp but they don't always work in my 625.
Truth be known a 44 special works better because it's a revolver cartridge. 45 ACP was designed for the 1911. The ballistics, psi and bullet weight are about the same.
I'm not selling my 625 though. I like to shoot it and I don't own a 44 Spl. If I had it to do over I would have a 24.
625 is gone from the S&W lineup. Sailed off into the sunset like many other very nice models due to lack of interest.
They're great! Mine is a 625-8, and I use Buffalo Bore 255 grain LFN Auto Rim standard pressure for 45 Colt power in a more efficient carry package. I keep a couple of full moon clips loaded with Buffalo Bore Outdoorsman +P 255 grain 45 ACP in my pocket for the same point of aim.
Mine is a 625-8 5 inch.. and not a JM... odd ball and I really like it... purchased it new and its SKU is 160927 which covers 2 different 5 inch models according to SCSW4
I love my 5 inch Model of 1988. Great trigger, very accurate, shoots 240 hydra shok +P like a mini-mag and drops piggys dead. Great revolver. Black target Millett rear, gold bead front. Way fun to blast away with.
Looks like I'm going to have to pull mine out of the safe and shoot it this week.
I've not noticed any load that works better than any other. It seems to like everything I put in it. I generally shoot 200 gr lead but have shot 185's and 175's and Berrys plated in different weights too with great results.
A few years ago I had a Colt 1917 with government markings and it too shot everything I put in it with good results.
Happen to have a 625–6 Mountain Gun in 45 ACP. Extremely accurate, especially with 200 grain. Nice set of S&W Morado wood combat grips. Sorry not smart with pictures at all.
ACP revolvers? Heck, I have a bunch of them! Stainless, as in Model 625? I have exactly one, a S&W Model 625-6 Mountain Gun. I bought it to back up a blued ACP revolver I built.
This model is on my short list of guns I would like to own. They are expensive, but I plan to have one at some point. Really appreciate the narratives on them. Seems like a great revolver.
In about 1998-99 I bought a used 5" 625 Series of 1989. I'm thinking around $250. I also halve a 1917 Brazilian Contract, I bought for $125 in the early 1980's. I have about 250 full moon clips and keep both guns fed a diet of 200 gr LRNFP's over 5.5 of WW231. Never shot anything with only two legs, but lots of 4-legged things have passed away after an encounter!
I have a great 4" 625-3, and just snagged a 3" 625-3. Back in the day when we could only carry revolvers in uniform, I would have killed for a 4" 625 as a duty gun.
