Bugging Out

von Moltke takes a back seat to Mike Tyson as a philosopher. Iron Mike says everyone has a plan till they get punched in the mouth. In a bugout scenario you will be punched repeatedly and probably in the mouth.

I'm curious as to why no one ever mentions where they go with their "kit". Guess I'm not much of a bugger.

My old kit bag is full of troubles.
"What's the use of worrying? It never was worthwhile..."

Well, until the shells started landing in your trench, anyway.(Or they start shooting the fruitcake off your moat )

Edited to add: I presume/hope you've read Spike Milligan's war diaries?

Eisenhower said "Plans are nothing, planning is everything."
Bug out plans, like home defense plans, should be tailored to individual needs. I live on high ground, if a flood comes it will be of Biblical proportions. When Sandy hit in 2012, my town was without power for 5 days, a friend who lives on the Jersey Shore-9 days, but one town over-1 day. The then interim minister of our church opened the Manse for bathing, cooking, cell and laptop recharging. Being a bicyclist I keep saying I should get a pedal generator, get a training stand that I can mount a bike on-all mine have generator lights.

I'm not going anywhere. I've lived at least 30 years past when I thought I would, I'm Baptized & went through Confirmation in the same Lutheran Church, so there's that. No sense in trying to fend off any attackers; sooner or later they'll win. For a temporary attack I have 5 mags of .40 caliber for the G23, a .30-30 for medium range, and shotguns that will make a real mess of my front yard. Also, one bullet for last resort.
I suppose anyone downstream about 300 miles away, whatever liquid wastes I have deposited into the Ohio should be neutralized before it gets that far.

It'll be just my luck, when the balloon goes up all the 5 ton trucks with lift gates will all be rented out, so how in the world will I be able to move all my food, water, ammo and guns (and Spegel grips) to a new location?

I'm just staying put, even if I can get said truck, it's too much trouble to get it all loaded up and in an endless line of traffic anyway....

I'm bummed, so I guess I'll start drinking all the whiskey I've put up now........

Happy Holidays.... er.... oh, whatever.....:)

I...Worse comes to worse there’s a hog farm down the road to dispose of uninvited guests.
Oh, that brings up some VERY unpleasant memories for us up here in British Columbia, although you wouldn't likely have known about the Willy Pickton case :(
Canadian serial killer and former pig farmer. He is suspected of being one of the most prolific serial killers in Canadian history...

I'll do whatever is necessary.

Having said that, the reality is that at my age and with my health issues, I won't be bugging out. Instead I'll just hunker down here at home and take it one day at a time. I'll be fine for a while. But honestly, I'll be lucky to last 3 months.

When people talk "Bug Out" I always ask, TO WHERE? If we ever have a nuclear war, National disaster etc. bugging out a few hundred miles won't mean squat - and I'm actually better off right where I am. In a serious nuclear exchange, the entire country will shortly be radiated anyway. I would not want to live and die like that! The essentials are right where I am - home. Food, security, shelter, supplies, etc. I see no point in loading up a vehicle and driving around to no-where, soon to run out of food, supplies and security.

Nope, I am not bugging out to anywhere!

“What are you going to do?”

Well I have done a realistic assessment of the type of threats I have and believe to be the most likely ones to occur in the future. This means no concerns about about zombies, direct nuclear attacks and mass riots / large scale civil disobedience. My target time period is two weeks as recommended by FEMA followed by one, then three months of supplies.

The most likely and frequent problem I have had over my life is power outages due to severe weather both in summer and winter. In the summer it is from Tornadoes and a rare inland hurricane. In the winter Ice breaking trees and tree limbs knocking down power lines.

Warm weather outages are relatively easy to prepare for. Cooking can be done outdoors on the grill. Food spoils after three days but a generator to power the fridge and freezer will prolong the life of the contents. No air conditioning might mean be uncomfortable but isn’t life threatening event.

Power outage in the winter especially during severe weather we are having at the moment is a life threatening event. A alternate heat source is mandatory. My furnace is propane and I have a generator for the fan. In addition I brought a Mr. Heater room propane heater last year.

The long term event I am most concerned about is a EMP. This event requires a lot of planning, preparation and supplies.

As for what I will do when people show up hard choices will have to be made. I have already decided i am only taking in my Daughter, her hubby and their kids. Other family are on their own. I am the prepper in the family and am not taken seriously. So, in other words, you buy your ticket and enjoy the ride.

In 2022 I stepped up my preps with a long ways yet to go. It is a ongoing process.

As this is a gun forum I have that area well covered.

Note to "Electric stove, Apartment dwellers." Buy a single burner camping stove! Ivan

I'm cooking on a variation of what Ivan has suggested. It has been marketed as a fish cooker that can be carried in a boat for preparing shore lunches. It hooks up to a 20 pound propane gas bottle, and a full bottle took me through a lot of chili cookoffs before needing to be refilled. It puts out an amazing amount of BTUs.
