Sigh....

Gordon Lightfoot, legendary Canadian singer-songwriter, dead at 84

...
often called Canada’s greatest songwriter and known worldwide as one of the founding fathers of folk-rock, has died at age 84, a representative for his family said Monday.

The musician recently cancelled all of his 2023 tour dates, citing “health-related issues.” His representatives did not elaborate further at the time.

An iconic figure in the ‘60s and ‘70s, Lightfoot wrote many songs that transcended borders and music tastes, including The Wreck of Edmund Fitzgerald, Ribbon of Darkness and If You Could Read My Mind, among many, many others.

Legendary musicians like Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Hank Williams Jr., Bob Dylan and Barbra Streisand — to name just a few — have recorded Lightfoot’s songs to great success, and he was widely respected in the music industry...

Not unexpected but still hate to hear this. Saw him for the last of five times a little over a year ago. He was frail and the voice was gone, but the crowd loved him anyway.

A giant among prolific songwriters. Talent and drive that made everything else in his life take a back seat until he was well up in age and gained a different perspective that many of us attain with age and hard experience.

Like I said, not unexpected, but he's one I shall miss greatly. Thankfully his body of work will survive him and be enjoyed for a long time to come.

From the moment I first heard "If You Could Read My Mind", more than 50 years ago, I've been a Gordon Lightfoot fan. I first saw him live in 1974, at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center in Saratoga Springs, New York, and enjoyed many more of his concerts over the years.

My iTunes file has 465 GL recordings (many of them multiple renditions of the same tune) and I never get tired of listening to him.

May Mr. Lightfoot rest in peace, and may his memory always be a blessing to his loved ones and his legion of fans...

He was fantastic. RIP. The Wreck of the Edmond Fitzgerald is a ghostly song. Esp. when added to the ROV footage of the wreck as it is now. He had some great music.

My first wife and I saw him in the small venue at the Orleans here in Vegas, so that's early 2010 or before. Sadly, the place was a bit thin on audience. RIP.

To this day, I can't tell you how often I use his words to express my thoughts.

If You Could Read My Mind and Carefree Highway were etched in my brain the first time I heard them.

It wasn't his words alone, his delivery carried them perfectly. Other artist can record, but no one I've heard could truly cover a Lightfoot song.
