A couple months back I posted a thread wanting to discuss the wonders of the 617. I let go of another mighty fine revolver to make it happen, but I have zero regrets.

I picked up one with a 6" bbl. I think it was $825...$850 with a LEO discount.

It's still bone stock in appearance. Only thing I've done is shoot it enough to smooth it out and swap in a 12 lb trigger return spring. I did get a few DS-10 speed loaders and a x10 loading block.

First time I went to shoot it, I used a rest, shot single action and...didn't impress myself. It was flat embarassing. I repeated my failure a few times with different ammo. Same. Just as I was packing up to leave for the day, I stood up, rolled it thru double action ten times and voila! Very nice, Tight grouping. So I did it again....and again...and again....engage huge grin factor! I blew thru darn near a brick of ammo faster than I ever could have imagined!

I shot it the next day in Steel Challenge, and did very well. Most of my problems were from not hearing my .22 hit steel while someone the next range over was ripping off rounds through a full auto AR type pistol.

Weirdly...I've always shot revolver in Steel Challenge. Nobody knew or cared until I bought my 617. Then a nice gal my wife was chatting with asked if she could shoot it afterwards, as she had never shot a revolver. Of course I agreed to let her put rounds through it. She shot it and had a great time. So did her husband. He had never fired a revolver either. They both loved it.

I was wondering if they were just being polite right up until the next shoot when she told me she'd bought one identical to my own!

I didn't make the next Steel Challenge due to my work schedule, but my wife and daughter did. Sure enough she was there with her 617. After the shoot just about everybody took it out for a spin and everyone loved it.

So...in my small neck of the woods, there's a small group of people that are developing a real appreciation for rimfire revolvers and 617s inparticular.

Y'all steered me right!

The 617 is the perfect firearm for introducing people to shooting. No one gets traumatized or hurt by flash/bang/recoil, everyone instantly understands the fun and challenge of precision shooting. Bring enough ammo.

It's a challenge to find a better day.. new shooter, 617 & a brick of 22's at the range..

I really enjoy my 617. Shot it at an outlaw match in lieu of a 22 carbine. Came in the upper 50% despite not having an optic nor the long arm stability.
One of my favorite revolvers and handguns. Simply fun to shoot.

For me the 617 is the Cadillac of .22 revolvers. I have owned three, an 8 3/8 inch bbl full target, a 6 inch full target, and now a 4 inch. I like the balance of the 4 inch model, I liked the 6 incher for longer sight radius. The 8 3/8 inch bbl was just too long. I prefer the full target trigger and hammer, but the action on my 4 incher is so slick and precise I don't want to mess with a change out.

It's taken me a very, very long time to embrace the 617. They're SO unnecessarily heavy for a .22! a Kit gun is so much more proportionate! For the size and weight, I'm better off with a light rifle!

Well....Turns out that I've gotten so wrapped around the axle about optimum protection this that and the other that I forgot to simply have fun. I really can't think of a better suited revolver for sheer enjoyment!

In the future mine will get grips that actually fit my hand, a plugged Hillary hole (Just cuz it annoys me), and an Apex Mass Driver hammer, and an extended firing pin. I'm a tad squeamish about swapping out any hammer springs due to the fickle nature of .22 LR ammo.

I'm a fence sitter with doubts about red dots on pistols, but if ever there was gunna be a revolver to try one out on and give it a fair chance, I'm thinkin' this is it.

Again, I'd love to post pics, but mine is just like any other stock image.

This is the grips that I have on mine, super comfortable for me. The second set will fit on my 617 also and people with smaller hands seem to prefer them. In case you cant tell, I do like Tulipwood smooth grips.

The 22 K frames are great in general. For me ( personal preferences only) there are 3 things wrong with the 617:
They are not available blued
They have the lock
They are not available without that full lug barrel.

Or to put it another way the only way to improve upon a classic 6 shot standard barrel blue 17 would be a ten shot cylinder

I love my 617s. I have the 6 and 4 inch models. For all the people who don't like the underlug try the 4inch. It balances perfectly.

I'm a tinkerer and have played with the various hammer kits. The Apex Mass Drive is excellent if you can find one. I was lucky enough to get the first one commercially available. I had the older model hammer and Apex had an Open House. When I asked Randy to look at my gun he immediately swapped out the old model for the new Mass Drive.

If you can't find the Apex hammer give a try to RevUp Action Hammer.com. I've been playing with their hammers and I'm very impressed.

Both will allow a lighter trigger pull.

You can't beat the DS-10 speed loaders. They especially come in handy if you are shooting Steel Challenge and you will go through a box of ammo pretty quickly using them and the loading blocks. I have 20 DS-10s. I load them all up before a match and bring another 150 rounds in a loading block case. Plenty of ammo to get through the Challenge.

I can't do anything about not being blue, or the lock, but a few do exist without the full lug barrel.

The 4 inch 617 full lug is about perfect though.

My Hilary Hole 617, mfg around 2011, shoots really well. It ought to. I sent it back to the factory 3 times. The guy at S&W wasted no time in letting me know that he knew more about revolvers than anyone.

The barrel is now indexed improperly. The front sight is visibly crooked and the rib lines on the barrel are obviously off center. If there’s anyone here that can properly index that barrel, I’d be interested in having that done. It’s not off by much. But how does a professional let shoddy work like that go out? I’ll buy old Smiths. I have no use for the newer ones.

My 617 is by far my favorite .22 Mine is just about 1 year old and only thing I have done is added an optic. I even like the rubber grips. Yesterday at the range I fired 150 rounds thru this (total exceeds 3000 so far) I also have a new Colt King Cobra Target .22 and I only fired 50 rounds thru it yesterday.

They did make some without the full lug barrel.........They were sneaky.....Didn't announce them and they were gone before I could get one....Member BDgreen has one that he has shown here in the past.

My 617 is a pre lock version and they only change I made were to the grips, I added some VZ G-19 that look and feel better to the rubber ones that came on it. The only 22 revolver I like more is the new Colt King Cobra Target 22, this Colt has a much lighter DA pull. that said my 617 isn't going anywhere.

This plus my 20 loaded DS-10 speed loaders gets me through a Steel Challenge Match. I was given most of my loaders from friends that won them at matches and didn't have 617s.

The newest model is really nice. Easier to grab from my belted holders and they release much faster. I was given 5 and ordered 5 more, I'm like that. Can't have too much of a good thing.
