A couple months back I posted a thread wanting to discuss the wonders of the 617. I let go of another mighty fine revolver to make it happen, but I have zero regrets.
I picked up one with a 6" bbl. I think it was $825...$850 with a LEO discount.
It's still bone stock in appearance. Only thing I've done is shoot it enough to smooth it out and swap in a 12 lb trigger return spring. I did get a few DS-10 speed loaders and a x10 loading block.
First time I went to shoot it, I used a rest, shot single action and...didn't impress myself. It was flat embarassing. I repeated my failure a few times with different ammo. Same. Just as I was packing up to leave for the day, I stood up, rolled it thru double action ten times and voila! Very nice, Tight grouping. So I did it again....and again...and again....engage huge grin factor! I blew thru darn near a brick of ammo faster than I ever could have imagined!
I shot it the next day in Steel Challenge, and did very well. Most of my problems were from not hearing my .22 hit steel while someone the next range over was ripping off rounds through a full auto AR type pistol.
Weirdly...I've always shot revolver in Steel Challenge. Nobody knew or cared until I bought my 617. Then a nice gal my wife was chatting with asked if she could shoot it afterwards, as she had never shot a revolver. Of course I agreed to let her put rounds through it. She shot it and had a great time. So did her husband. He had never fired a revolver either. They both loved it.
I was wondering if they were just being polite right up until the next shoot when she told me she'd bought one identical to my own!
I didn't make the next Steel Challenge due to my work schedule, but my wife and daughter did. Sure enough she was there with her 617. After the shoot just about everybody took it out for a spin and everyone loved it.
So...in my small neck of the woods, there's a small group of people that are developing a real appreciation for rimfire revolvers and 617s inparticular.
Y'all steered me right!
