I'd been seeing this 28-2 at my LGS for a couple/three months, but no one seemed interested in it. I suppose the ugly grips had something to do with it. Not only were they ugly, they're for a K-frame.

I finally put it on layaway for a while, and finally got it out of hock and carried it home. Off came the ugly grips, followed by a good flush with Gunscrubber, then a bore and charge holes cleaning with Hoppes, patches, brushes, and more patches. A drop of oil here and there, in every hole I could find, and it was feeling pretty frisky. S/A trigger broke at 2 3/4 pounds, and DA broke just after my 8 pound trigger scale topped out. VERY smooth.

A light DNC with Flitz, followed by some Ren Wax and it was starting to look presentable. In my "junk" drawer I had a set of Altamont N-frame grips that didn't fit right on the Model 29-10 they'd come on, but fit perfectly on this one for some reason.

This is what it looked like before.

And after.

I took it to the range this morning and put 100 rounds of my 357 wimps through it. It shoots just fine. Of course it's a 28-2, so that was expected.

I may be wrong, and not for the first time, but the fit of the grips you had in the first picture makes me think they are not N frame grips, but probably K frame.

They are for a K-Frame Doug. I haven't decided what I'm going to do with them. For now they're filling up a cardboard box in my "junk drawer."

After the clean up and especially the proper grips she is now looking good.
Very nice indeed
You did good , sir ..

Great revolver. It deserves period correct grips, magna or target.

Good luck and good shooting!

Thanks. I might look for a period set of Magna's for it one of these days. I always think of the 4" guns as having targets, and the 6" ones as having Magna's. You'd think it would be the other way around. For now, I'm satisfied with the Altamont's. They didn't cost me anything extra, since I already had them. :D

Speaking of Altamont. This set of grips is missing the alignment pins, so I called Altamont to see about buying a pair. The guy who answered the phone told me he had bad news and good news for me. The bad news was that they don't sell those little pins. The good news was he'd put a few in an envelope and send them to me no charge. Pretty good customer service.

Nice revolver, and you did a good job cleaning it up. The stocks are nice too, although most of us would prefer that you get a set of period correct magna stocks (it's not our money so we can easily make suggestions!). I have big mitts and magnas aren't the best fit for me, so I often swap for target stocks or Pachmayrs when going to the range. HPs are great revolvers and the prices are starting to climb. I hope you got a good deal on that one. Enjoy!

CajunBass that's a very nice revolver. My brother has a 28 ,6 inch and he likes it better than his pythons.Enjoy your new found treasure.

Good find, what era is it, 60's or '70s?

"The BOOK" indicates 1978-80.

Very nice revolver and you did well on the cleanup. I like the Altamont grips. I have a 28-2 that has Altamont classic panel satin finish rosewood, but I'm thinking yours look better on the Highway Patrolman. :D

I thought they looked great on the 29-10 they came on.

I was really disappointed when they wiggled just enough to be annoying on that gun. I tried tightening them, and shimming them. I took the alignment pins from another set of Altamont's on another gun, but they still wiggled, so I took them off and replaced them with a Hogue Monogrip and VOLA. No more wiggle.

Then I tried them on the 28-2, thinking they'd at least do for a picture while I looked for something else, but they seem to be a perfect fit, and worked just fine at the range. I guess I'll just let them stay, at least for now.
