We have a 17 year old son who has been a lifelong Godzilla fan. Consequently we own most of the 30 or so Godzilla movies and have been to the theater to see all the new releases in the last 12 years or so.

New one making the rounds is Godzilla Minus One. We caught the black & white version with subtitles at a theater last weekend (my wife and I have become fans of a sort and it's something our son wants us to do with him - kind of a tradition now). The movie is essentially "the original" as in depicting the first interaction of Godzilla with mankind soon after WWII (sorry no Raymond Burr) but the story line is completely different than "the original." Loved it in black & white as it was much more period and it was terrifically filmed.

Anyone else seen it? My wife and I agreed it was the best Godzilla movie and we've seen all of them. We also agreed it was a great movie regardless of being a Godzilla movie.

Gonna wait for it to stream, but director does not want it streaming while still in theaters. The black and white release pushed that date back. But it has been on my radar for awhile.

Discovered that in my rush to watch the championship games last Sunday that I missed a Godzilla marathon on Comet TV. Drat!

Not a fan of Godzirra...If I had a kid was a big fan...I probably get him to a shrink in a hurry. So much hype. Gotta see something worthwhile..like all the end of the world real monsters...like THEM!! AND the other irradiated critters in the Nevada and Aridzona/New Mexico deserts...along with the crab monsters in the ocean...and the other real documentaries like Invasion of the Body Snatchers...and of course...the real story about the BLOB...and the great true story of the Thing!...No rubber suit monsters in any of those documentaries.... no siree bob...just history...real true stories

or somethin! GORT Klattu Barada Nickto

My favorite Comet marathons! I make the call for the grandsons to spend the weekend every time they are on and we watch every one...the kids like them almost as much as me. And as a bonus we get to watch Thunderbirds Sunday 6:00 AM on MeTV...Britain's gift to classic TV.

“Them” and “The Thing” were good. “Attack of the Crab Monsters” had the telepathic giant crab that transmitted in a French accent. Awesome!

I'm a fan of the big lizard. :D
I had every intention of seeing Minus One. But when I got around to it, It had already left the local theater after only two weeks. :(
Guess I'll have to wait for it to stream.

BTW: Am I the only person who liked the 1998 version?

No Grayfox, you're not the only one, though that one lacked the depth and character development of this new one. Probably never would have seen the vast majority of the Godzilla movies if not for going with my son. Most of the more recent ones are about a whole lot more than the monster. Godzilla is a friend to mankind in a few of them.

This most recent one is one of the best, if not the best, coping with PTSD, postwar dramas, love story, and what it takes for (human) warriors to finally get a good nights sleep movies I've ever seen. I can see someone thinking of it as an art film.

Thanks for all your thoughts!

I caught it in the theaters a while ago. Best Godzilla movie ever, and the fact they did it on a $5 million budget is astounding.

Its more of a post-war Japan drama. The main character is a kamikaze pilot (yep) dealing with the loss of the war. Godzilla holds it all together, but it is so much more than a monster movie.

See it on the big screen if you can. Watching at home won’t be nearly the same experience.
