Along with the 32HE in my other thread, I also picked up a pretty decent M&P 38, with serial number 811596. What would be the period correct grips for the revolver? TIA.

Would they be regular, or sharp shoulder?
Neither. I believe you are thinking of Magna stocks. Yours would have shipped with the prewar style of service stocks. As Alan pointed out, they were rounded off just above the medallion in the stock circle. They did not extend up onto the frame above the grip frame.

Yes, I was, Jack, thanks. As I mentioned before, this is a bit out of my database, so I'm learning. I thought I remembered reading that the walnut grips came on the target models, with square K butts, and the regular old plain ones had the plastic ones.

Only the early round butt K frames came with hard rubber (NOT plastic) stocks.

Jack is much more informed about this, but to my recollection the black hard rubber stocks were only made for round butt K frames.

Edit to add: Gil beat me to it!

Correct. Round butt K frames got black hard rubber consistently (with some exceptions) from 1899 at least until the 1920s. On the 2" M&P, they continue to show up even into the early 1950s.

In addition, the two screw extension target stocks had the option of walnut and hard rubber. These were used on certain I frames, including the .22/32 Heavy Frame Target model. Here is an example from my collection. This one shipped in January, 1926.
