Picked this up a while back. Mod 28-2 NYSP here in NC. Grips are few hundred off the serial number. Dates to 63. Thought I would share it. Not sure of if it's rare. But happy I picked it up. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

The 28-2 is a nice revolver and have gone up in value over the last few years like most. The NYSP stamp might make it more valuable to some for sure. I have a couple of them and they are great shooters. Neither of mine have any department stamps or markings on them.

Nice revolver! With those NYSP markings, I'd be inclined to spend a few bucks on a factory letter to at least verify authenticity. The NYSP bought Model 28s in lieu of 520s when Smith and Wesson could not meet the timeline the NYSP required with the 520 production. The 28s were available off-the-shelf in the required quantity.

Great find! Here's a couple,,,

I've had the NYSP 681 for several years. I stumbled across the 28-2 NYSP a few months ago. When I purchased it, it came in a one-piece S&W box. THAT box was from a NYSP 681 and was numbered a couple hundred away from my 681. It had the Troopers # on it. Maybe the prior owner put his 28-2 into this box when he was issued a new 681?? Makes you wonder,,
I did have a correct period 28-2 two-piece box so the cousins are well cared for;)

When I bought my MSHP Combat Masterpiece from the son of the Trooper who carried it on duty, it came to me in a Model 66 box. When the MSHP switched from the 5" Combat Masterpiece, those were replaced by Model 66 revolvers. When the CMs were sold to Troopers, Model 66 boxes were handy because they had just been purchased. The armorer simply delivered the old Combat Masterpiece revolvers to the FFL in Model 66 boxes, and the FFL who was doing the transfers to Troopers handed them to the Trooper in those boxes.

I suspect something similar was done with your Highway Patrolman.

Really nice looking 4” Highway Patrolman. Those Magnas may be only a few hundred numbers off, but a decade younger than the gun. A 1963 shipped gun would have had an S serial number and a diamond around the escutcheons. That same number gun with an N and grips without diamonds would date to around 1975.

I like those NYSP M28s.

The serial number range should be in the N546xxx and date to the 1978-80 era. The correct SN is stamped on the butt.

This occurred in late 1979, as S&W was well into production of the M520 and finished production after NYSP had chosen the M28-2 due to its immediate availability. M520 production was complete in Feb of 1980, but the guns were not offered for sale until June of 1980. This timeline would be well after OP's revolver was made unless he is in error on the SN, which I feel he is. His gun should be 1979 manufacture. The NYSP serials are in the N546xxx range as Muley Gil mentioned above, which falls just earlier than the M520 range of N557750 to N560860. I own a M520, SN N558680.

I have a 6" 28 no dash. Have tried on & off for a 4". Don't really need it because have a 586 4" no dash, but all know how that works. Bob
