Escaping CA to OR - soon!
Is the S&W Model 68 "for real CHP C&R eligible? Not the Commemorative version with presentation box, but an "as issued" actual Model 68?

Am looking at buying from a retired CHP friend, still has the "CHP" stamp, no "OHB" overstamp.

$800.00 out the door.

If not over 50 years old by serial number look up, it is not C&R
I don’t think the 68’s came out until the late 70’s or early 80’s so no where close to old enough

The ATF will occasionally list by name/ make specific models younger than 50 that they make exceptions for but I don’t think the 68’s are on that list

Obviously depending on condition, and assume it’s solid, I would buy it in a heartbeat. They were made from 1977 to 1990 ending with the 68-2. Originals were 4 inch 66 frames over stamped to the 68. Very historical smith in my opinion and I want one for my collection.

If you are both in CA, can you not do a private party transfer?

But if so, you only have 18 more days to escape to OR. ;)

I checked the ATF list and didn't see the 68 listed. I could have sworn it was, but maybe it was the commemorative version.

The gun is in OR. I could do SAE (single action exemption) to get it into CA, but really don't want to get hit with the freight, DROs and tax and excise hit. The "nice price" is $725.00. And to defray even more I have a ANIB Model 58 that a friend is buying, so I'd have a fair amount left over.

will have to ponder a bit.

There's a show in Reno this weekend, spending $$$ there may settle matters.

Nope. That "must go through a dealer" lunacy has infected all of the Idiocracy of the I-5 corridor. Washington used to be a great place to live or visit. Now, it is as bad as California and I would not encourage anyone to come here.

Exactly right!

After leaving CA. after almost 50 years. I settled in Utah. 1st thing I bought, was a live 1943 Thompson SMG on my C&R. The class 3 dealer here said I could not do it in a C&R. DUH !!! ATF had no problem with the transfer from a guy in Alabama. Paid my $200 for the tax stamp and did all the paperwork, then he sent me the gun. Big Larry
