Not sure how to determine if its a 4 or 5 screw

Oh yes. I’ve been eyeing this one up.
This will go for 3500 or more I think.
No box or papers but a beauty.
It’s a four screw.
Remember, if you win an auction, you’ll only pay $25 more than the other guy, so it’s not like you’ll ever pay way over the mkt value.

Gun pictured is a 4-screw. I’d wager $3k-ish as to value. Very nice example but I’d stash a bit more cash away and wait for a 5-screw myself. OP- 5th screw would be on top right sideplate behind cylinder shield.

Here is a 5 screw. The 5th screw is at the top of the side plate.

That's a real beauty! It should sell for $2500+ even without the case and goodies. I was fortunate enough to pick up this 4-screw .44 Magnum a few years ago for $1600 (with an incorrect mahogany presentation case). Since the case is worth $150+, I feel that I got a fair deal. It's from the same time period (S177963; shipped in July 1958). Although a lot of collectors lean more towards the 5-screw versions and value them higher, IMHO I think that the 4-screws are every bit as nice and just as rare. This is one of the gems in my modest collection. Let us know what happens.

Here in california i pay an extra 11% excise tax plus $37 dross fee plus the cheapest place that does transfers near me chargers $85 for the transfer.

The 4 screw non model marked guns were produced in a short window of time. Probably fewer of them than the 5 screw guns, just guessing. The order to delete the top sideplate screw was written in September 1956 and the order to begin model numbers in June 57. My understanding is that it was really 1958 before model marked guns were shipped. My non model marked, 4 screw S171643 shipped on August 16, 1957.

Generally speaking, the serial number range for non-model marked 44 Magnums with a 4-screw frame is S167500 to S184000. These 16,500 serial numbers are shared between the Model 29 and eight other models. S&W made approximately 7100 44 Magnums in 1957, and for the first six months or so, 5-screw and 4-screw guns were shipped together. It has been estimated approximately 3400 5-screw guns were shipped in 1957, leaving 3700 with a 4-screw frame. I would guess most of the 44 Magnums made in 1958 did not have a model number, so that would add another 4700 to the total. The grand total of 4-screw guns shipped without a model number is 8400. The total number of 5-screw guns is estimated at 6500.
