Not only did my Grampa TJ Ryder chase Dillinger around the Midwest, he also helped solve this murder, his second that I’ve uncovered (Dillinger story and ANOTHER solved murder case can be found in Fall 2020 S&W Journal).

Criminals are dumb, aren’t they? As I understand it, the 18 year old boyfriend of the decedent’s new bride confessed during his interrogation with my Grandpa that he and his girlfriend had killed her husband of one week. That makes 2 pretty brutal murders Grampa helped solve. My pride and admiration for him continue to grow.

Attached is the article I found and some pics of his trusty Registered Magnum, which I consider to be the very best RM ever, although darn good arguments could be made for RM #1 and RM #506.
RM 2787 was the only RM sighted in with 38 S&W Special Hi-Velocity ammo, per known certificates (Kevin’s work).

I’m wondering if there are any other one-family RMs out there ??

Enjoy pics and story! Dave

Nice story. After I retired from the Police Department I went to worked as a Private Investigator. Solving crimes is very rewarding.

That’s extremely cool, Dave! Was this RM passed down through your family, or did you acquire it differently? Having the certificate is awesome! It’s superb to own one of these special guns anyway, but to own one that you have proof (certificate) that it came exactly how your Grandpa ordered it is spectacular! I know that if it was a gun owned by a family member of mine, I would consider it the best RM ever too. In fact, it isn’t, and I still consider it WAY UP THERE because of its history! Thanks for sharing.

Fantastic history! I really admire those old time lawmen! There had to be tough and had little in the way of resources to aid in their investigations or day to day work. Little if any really training other than what they learned on the job!

Is that 100 yards with a 38 Special?

WOW!

Well there are .38 Specials, and then there are Special .38 Specials. Those noted here are very likely the latter, and commonly known as 38/44 S.&W. Special (among several other names). The regular, everyday .38 of the time here came out at 950fps (compared to today's at 755 fps), and compared to the Special .38/44 .38 Specials of the time at 1226 fps, (and finally) compared to the .357 Magnum of the time at 1512 fps----(compared to today's at 1235 fps).

And if you're wondering why yesteryear's regular everyday .38 Specials were downloaded to today's 755fps from 950 fps (and then 870 fps), you reckon maybe----just maybe it was so you'd spend more for today's +P .38 Special that comes romping out at 890 fps. I don't know the first thing about it, of course, but that makes some sense---sneaky sense, but I ain't bettin' against it!

Ralph Tremaine

And before anybody asks where all these numbers come from, the old time numbers come from various S&W catalogs of the times, and today's numbers come from the Gun Digest's ballistic tables. AND also before anybody asks, I don't know diddly about the barrel lengths used for S&W's numbers (except for the 1512 fps from the Magnum----that was from the 8 3/4" revolver barrel), and today's numbers from the Gun Digest used 4" vented barrels---vented, as in like the cylinder to barrel gap.

A very much belated addition: If those of you who are unduly impressed by folks shooting .38 Specials at 100 yards, get someone (Google??) to tell you about The Long Shooters. These folks from yesteryear shot in competitions at up to THREE HUNDRED YARDS!!!!-----with .38 Specials---the favorite revolver being the M&P Target. The targets were about the same size as a Turkey.

It appears that Sheriff Ryder took exceedingly good care of that RM. Definitely one of the most impressive original law enforcement RM packages that has been pictured on this forum. For those of you that haven’t seen it, here’s another one of Dave’s pictures showing the accessories, that I previously kept for reference…..
