Have been all over online trying to find info on this firearm I would like to buy. Just want to know a reasonable price to offer. S&W doesn't seem to offer the SN lookup tool I have seen mentioned. The firearm is a .45 Colt 625-6 Mountain Gun, SN CAT0002. 3.965" barrel (muzzle to cylinder), Hogue round bottom stock. Some more numbers on the frame with grip removed, right side. 21575 and 813, left side C24, 600, a large N, a large C, and an S stamped onto the large C. Just joined tonight. Hopefully I am doing this right. I know I am in the right spot.

CAT0002 should be the serial number. Probably 1996 but those triple-alpha number are strange. The other numbers are assembly numbers and mean nothing once the gun last left the factory. Hard to guesstimate value without photos. My WAG would be slightly north of $1k to significantly north of $1k, but that is a WAG. I am confident that somebody will be along with more solid info soon.

I bought one quite some time ago for $700. I haven’t seen a good specimen around here go for less than $1200.

Welcome to the FORUM from Mi .45 Caliber seems to be my favorite be it ACP or Colt. Have a 25-15 (Colt) a 625 JM (ACP), and a New Model Blackhawk Convertible 45. Forgot to mention 1911's. Let us know if you get it, and of course pictures! Bob

I got my 625-7 (pre-lock) Mountain Gun .45 Colt last year on here for $1200. Expensive, but worth it in my mind. It has been a very good revolver.

The 45 long Colt Mountain Gun is a favorite of many, bordering on a cult-like following.

Value, without images. $1000-$1200 would sell one around here.

Post images and a range report when you get it.

The Model 625-6 is my favorite stainless revolver, but I prefer ACP.

Kevin

Base is going to be 1K, anything less you better jump on it. Depending how many people know about it and shape, it could go to $1500 pretty easy. Does this gun have the original box with tools, that will add some money to it also.

Thanks for info

Thank you all for your input. I can get it for $950. Sounds like I won't lose on it. I was kind of thinking there could be something a little unique about it because of the serial number CAT0002. Maybe just random?

Serial number on mine starts with CAN…. I recall these were a limited run. It is a great gun, but the light profile barrel is a bit snappy with stiff loads.

eastface, if you want that revolver, you need to jump on it at that price. With that round, even a relatively light load (250 grain SWC at 800-1000) will do virtually anything you need.

Awesome

This is awesome. Don't do Facebook, X, Tik Tok. This is social media I can get into. You all have been very helpful and from the looks of it, been involved in the forum for a minute. I will probably make the purchase, add to my S&W collection and find out more about it down the road. Thanks again.

I bought my 625-6 Mountain Gun in June 1996, it’s one gun I have no plan to part with. Mine has a CAU serial prefix. If I could get another for under a grand I’d buy it in an instant. It’s one of my all time favorite revolvers

I tried a 29 MG with that same thin barrel with 44 Specials that was also notably "snappy" in recoil. I am not sure why it was so much worse than other N-frames. I am guessing the lack of weight out front. I cannot even imagine touching one off in 44 Magnum. No thank you.
