Hello all- been awhile.

I acquired a 29-2 this weekend at Wanenmacher's. I became all excited over it being a 3" barrel. As I understood- there was only 2 known snubbys in this series (internet info). Anyways- I have it. I was going to have it engraved, but if it's a legit hentooth, I won't. I understand the possibility exists it may be a return to S&W, or a gunsmith special. It has a tapered 3" barrel, not a standard barrel. S279XXX serial. What do I have?!

Hello Billy from Tulsa, Im rooting for partner. I hope its a factory 3" and
not an outside hack job. Waylay the engraving for awhile. Good luck and keep us up to date,

I think the title is a typo. It is a Model 29-2 as the OP says in the text. It could be a special order. The Standard Catalog says some were made in 3-1/2 inches. Probably need a letter to confirm before you have it scratched up.

Duh. I was late typing. Need to refresh before I post.

Am I going crazy or are those roll marks on the wrong sides?

If I am right it would lead me to believe it’s a custom job. Either way, very cool.

Definitely a 3". Several of us were discussing this yesterday while we were studying it. That tapered barrel threw me for a loop too. Colors between barrel and frame seems good.

There were times that occured from what I gather.

It appears to have a later 3" barrel (with reversed rollmarks, as noted above) that has been milled to accept a barrel pin. There would be a gap of 20-25 years between the end of model 29-2 production and the introduction of this barrel style.

We put those on at the table, planning out the engraving. It's a BBQ gun, probably carry Specials in it. But, yeah.

It would be a great BBQ gun engraved but you know what General Patton and I say about pearl grips?

Billy, great find and thank you for sharing. Sarge

I do. I set an actual set of ivory, and I liked these better. The ivory will go on another gun. I have a nickle gun I have to send off, so it'll get those.

All- thanks for assisting me in sorting this out. I had asked on a Facebook page some time ago, about whether a P&R gun was ever made with a tapered barrel, and I was rewarded with many spirited "no's". When this jumped out at me from the 8 miles of tables I had walked on Saturday, it was a gift from above. The only "issue" being "well now I can't engrave it if it's rare". So now I have exactly what I wanted, since I would never use a 29-10 (assuming it has the hole). It was as if it was to be. Thanks again yall!
