Model 29-2 in a parkerized or powder coated finish

They made some 686s years back that had a black, matte finish. As I recall they were actual 686 SS guns too, not a 586.

Years ago, I had a friend who had just moved south from some place on the southern Alaska coast. He had a parkerized S&W 629! Whe asked, he said anything not so protected would rust to junk, in that climate, in no time. Guess that's a possibility.

They called it a "Midnight Black" finish.

I'm not sure if it is the same finish they used on the Model 36-6 or the 19-5 Diplomatic Security Service guns????

It's midnight black alright. And it seems to work well on Stainless. But does anyone know what exactly it is? A coating of some sort? Parkerizing or some other treatment?

If the price were right, like under $1000, would make a great classic carry/shooter without all the hand wringing about ruining the "collectors value".

Bought a 1964 Model 58 that had a finish much like that. Was THE best shooting 58 of the 10 I've owned... Had it for almost 20 years and just sold it last summer....

Came with the Target Stocks that were very beat up on the butt...friend shaped them down and rounded off the edges so there were kinda a PC Target....

But like I said, for the right price it would make a great shooter....

It all depends on the price, but I don't have a problem with it, it looks to be done pretty well.

The original finish was a glossy almost mirror like Bluing. Anything else somebody fooled around with it and ruined its value. If you like it buy it but I personally wouldn't touch one. I like the original finish And original gun. I have an original 1974 Dirty Harry all stock which I'll never touch and then I have a 29-10 that I put a trigger kit in, firing pin kit etc just to give it that little extra action but I just play around with that one shooting.... my other one's my collector item, I just like to look at it and take it out once in a while to shoot
