Traveling to the northeast with guns?

I'll be on a tour of the N/E in August.
I hear in NY you need a license to carry a handgun.
This may change my decision to bring them or not.
I'll be going to KY, IN, NY, MA, ME, NJ, MD, NC, TN.
Big circle.
Planning on shooting on a fiend's private land in WV, but don't want to take any risks legally.
They'd be unloaded, locked in a safe and ammo would be in a different place but I won't bring if there's a risk of me being stopped for a tail light out, speeding or any reason then get asked if I am carrying firearms.. leading to arrest, lawyers fees, loss of collectibles and major $$ just because..
Any advice?

Ship your guns to your friends house. Or leave the guns home.
Too risky, the cops there enjoy catching out of staters with guns.

You are definitely heading into anti-gun territory. Although the likelihood of getting caught is relatively small the penalties are enormous and could very well include years behind bars. If you drive an average Joe vehicle, nothing too sporty or flashy that would draw attention from the law. And it is not festooned with NRA, 2A or other pro-gun bumper stickers, you would probably get away with it. To borrow a phrase from Dirty Harry "Are you feeling lucky"?

Also, in NJ, hollow points are a felony, (each one a separate felony). Depending on the cops and DA, could be a very bad day.

Sounds like 12 Ga Single Shot time to me.
A while back met these folks who were Indian pottery and jewelry dealers.
They used to travel to the East Coast in their motorhome, selling pottery and jewelry.
So in the dark of the night, they go into New York City. And park on a side street waiting for the time to visit their clients.
They get a hard knock on the door of the motorhome, followed by a yell. This is the police open the door.
It was New York's finest and he wanted to know how long you gonna have this damn thing parked here.
They told him until we go visit a couple of nearby customers.
He said, get it out here as fast as you can. And noticing the New Mexico license plates, he asked do you have any guns?
After a moment of consideration, Wayne, truthfully, replied, yes, we do.
The policeman mumbled something like you're in a dangerous area.
I have been to their house, it looks like a museum!

As far as Vt, NH and ME, you can strap 'em on. No permit required.
A number of the rest you mention don't send out Christmas cards to gun owners.
But, keep them in a locked box, ammo in a separate locked box, drive the speed limit, put hammer & sickle bumpers stickers on and you should be good to go.

NY, NJ, and MD are all problematic for visiting with guns. I would NOT risk bringing a gun to any of those 3 states.
I live in PA and I avoid those 3 states like my life depends on it. (Because it just might.)

How are you bypassing VA? There you have a choice of not carrying or not running any interstate quality highway. VA bans firearms in any Commonwealth run roadside rest, even if you have a carry permit.

Although at least four of the states you mention are in my opinion gun-reasonable, I wouldn't take any chances with several of the others. Leave your guns at home. Or, better yet, just avoid travel in the anti-freedom states. They don't deserve your discretionary dollars.

You are welcome with your guns here in Indiana, but I would keep them concealed, just as a practical matter and good judgment, and keep your home state permit handy, just in case. I rarely see open carriers where I live, but it is not unheard of. I don't recommend it. The OCers are usually the nylon holster types and appear to be somewhat on the "casual" side. I try to avoid them in restaurants and gas stations, but I imagine 95% of them are harmless.

You're in minimal danger here in most of Indiana, but being alert and using common sense is always wise, anywhere. There are a few places here that I avoid, and you can probably guess where they are. Roaming around in densely populated areas after dark is never a good thing, with or without firearms. Out in the countryside where I live, it's highly unlikely that you will need a weapon. Be sure to try a tenderloin sandwich while you're here. Most out-of-state visitors never seem to have heard of them.

I recently brought 3 handguns to RI for the summer. I did not bring any ammo. I worry, but the chance is slim but not impossible to get caught. When I moved to GA, I had a trunk full of guns. Whew, I made it. Again, no ammo

I go to Maryland, Deleware, New Jersey quite often. I have a firm rule. If I have to cross the Potomac River, the guns stay home.

Just a note about hollow points in NJ. There's no problem with them in a residents home, the issue is if you have them loaded if you legally carry outside the home. However, the flex tip bullets like Critical Defense/Duty are legal.

Ok.. let me ask just to be clear.
By "carry" do you mean have on your person?
Or have locked in your car?
Is there a difference as far as the law goes?
I won't be carrying, I would just get them out when I want to shoot them.

There are laws that protect you when passing through other states…… BUT it sounds like NY and NJ are destinations. That's a problem. Long guns in NY ok. Handguns not ok.

I have a NY permit and I'm hesitant traveling back to for visits with a gun.

Federal all will protect you traveling though but you can't stop for more than gas in NY and the northeast states like it.
