What could it hurt? And you would sell gazillions!......No lock of course.

Bring a 942 (Alloy)! And make one that doesn't bind up when used with moon clips! I traded or sold every 940 I ever had because they bind up with the clips.

When you say 'bind up', do you mean the casings became difficult to extract? If so, all you have to do is run a flexible hone (from Brownell's) thru each chamber for a few revolutions, and problem solved. Before that, i had trouble with the empty casings sticking after a few reloads, now it is flawless.
 
Ed is right about the Hones helping some of the 940s Narkcop, Now if I could only find out were the hones have been sent to..
I have an early 642 that is begging for a 940s cylinder to be fit to it..
I'll just have to be happy with my two 940s untill then..

I can deal with cases sticking but once in a while EVERY 940 I ever shot (Maybe 5 or 6) would completely lock up at the rear faceplate and be HARD to even open the cylinder. I was told that this was a common problem due to the recoil jamming the case into the firing pin hole.
 
The Tapered case of the 9mm round makes the brass move to the rear apon firing & If "HOT" rounds are used they can cause the cylinder to bind up as you describe Narkcop..
Were you shooting +P+ Nines in those 940s??
Most of the 940s had very rough cylinder holes & this also had alot to do with the sticking case situation..
Almost sounds like you had primer flow on those 940??
I've got at least one 940 that works well & picked another one up to keep my 4" M547 9mm S&W Company..

I would also love to see a M942 available..

$500 was a great price for a 940..
My 2nd one I picked up I paid $550 OTD..
I still may be putting a 940s cylinder into my 642 in the near future, Sure the recoil would be "Snappy":D

Here's what the S&W Manual has to say about the 940 & ammunition..

"In the Model 940 revolver, some brands of 9mm parabellum ammunition may cause difficulty in extracting spent cartrige cases from the cylinder. If this situation occurs thoroughly clean the cylinder charge holes with solvent. If this condition persists, we recommend changing to another brand of 9mm parabellum ammunition."

Guess it wasn't just me..

I found my 940 was a tad sticky if I were to use it in rapid fire and reload application.

With a little work from Smith and Wesson, Those issues could be resolved, I have never seen a line (940) with such bad bores, Not 1 or my other model offerings from S&W have poorly machined bores.
I would think that a line of J frame 9mms may sell ok, As well as a line of K frame 9mms will also sell ok, But I dont know if they would sell well enough to start making the cylinders again, and resetting the equipment for 2 weeks production of 9mm handguns,

BUT if S&W were to offer cylinders for these J and K frames with a small fee to set them up at Smith and Wesson would be a welcome change for me!
I would send them my 2" model 64 in a heartbeat for a fitting of a 6 shot 9x23 cylinder that would shoot 9mm para, 38 super and 9x23....
AND they would also make sure I could swap out the original 38 special cylinder so I would have a "convertable" 64!

Not sure why the 940s have such crumby looking bores & it's not just because it's a tapered case because my 547s bores are smooth & of course it has no troubles with sticking cases, Also a Ruger SP101 9mm I used to have had smooth bores & it also had no trouble extracting any cases fired including +P+.. I Traded that Ruger for my 4" M547 BTW..
I'd still like to get myself a M940 cylinder & fit it to my 642
I would want to do it so both the 38 & 9mm cylinder could be swaped.. I suppose with the right shims & alot of time it could be done properly maybe without having to swap a hand etc..
I think S&W had a Bad Reamer that they used alot when coming up with the 940s or a bad coolant sprayer or something??
I wonder what Roy Jinks knows about this problem & it's cause..

You think it's possible somebody's brother in law needed a gig, so they put him in a back room somewhere with .38 Special cylinders, an under charged DeWalt cordless drill drive and some whiffed bits?
