Would love to see a semi-auto 12 gauge M&P Tactical shotgun. Ghost rings, light accessory rail, 7+ rd capacity, etc. included.

Bump again!

There are other options available out there already, but S&W is a name I know and trust. I'll wait to get a M&P12. Until then, I'll go without

That's the only hole I can think of in the M&P lineup. If S&W built an M&P autoloading shotgun that ran as good as my M&P-15, I would buy one.

It is pretty obvious that S&W wants to get back on top again in the LE market and they're on the fast track to achieving that goal IMO.

I would like to see the name on a shotgun, too, but I don't think it's likely for a couple of reasons. First, seems like S&W's attempt at shotguns a few years ago (remember the 916?) didn't go too well. Can't recall if they were domestic or not. I seem to recall that Smith stamped their names on some better ones put out after that, IIRC, but they were not utility grade. Second, the trend is and will likely remain the AR platform for LE which, obviously, they are on board with) for a lot of good (and some not as good) reasons. Third, I think the police shotgun market is pretty well taken care of with the 870 and Benelli.
But I'm not in marketing...

Of course, S&W had the right SGN a while back - the 3000. A much improved version of the famed 870. Smooth, well-finished, reliable, and incorporating real improvements in the areas that needed it.

I had a phone conversation with the then-president of S&W back in 1988 or 1989, where he confessed they screwed up dropping the 3000, and then letting Mossberg purchase the rights to it. Mossberg showed it in one catalog, but never sold it in this country.

OldLawman,
When Mossberg DID list it, what did they identify it as?
Where did Mossberg end up selling it, and what was it designated as for overseas sale? If you know?
THANKS!

In 30+ years of LE, I've never seen an autoloading shotgun in a patrol car. I've seen Remington 870s, S&W 3000s, and the occasional Mossberg 500 & 590, but they're all pumps. I don't think the shotgun will be replaced by the AR-15 anytime soon... most cars carry both in my neck of the woods.

I would buy a new autoloader for use at work if S&W "M&Ped" it. S&W's M&P line of weaponry is very well-made and reliable. They have been quick to correct any problems that have occurred in their newer designs. I bought an M&P-15 for work and I have had ZERO issues with it. I have a co-worker that bought an M&P-45 and it is a nice, reliable pistol.

From what I've seen, the weapons in the M&P line are a pretty good value.

Bump again!

Does anyone from S&W read these forums? What's the best way to show interest in this? I wrote to S&W customer service but I don't think that's going to generate any real interest in developing this. Ideas?

That would be awesome. Having never owned a S&W {mostly due to cost} I'm catching up. I have an M&P40, M&P15 and will soon own a M&P wheelgun. Hell I think I'll name my next dog M&P

Does anyone from S&W read these forums?

That is a very good question. I doubt that any of the real decision makers are poring over this forum to see what we are thinking, but I'd like to be proven wrong!

I'll take one too, It should look good with my 916's 3000's and 1000's. I have a 916 police that I use for home defense purposes and as a deer gun here in Ohio,(shoots just as good as my rifled slug gun out to 90yds. or so) May not be as solid as an 870 or 3000 but still not a bad gun. JMO

So after reading this thread so far and thinking about an M&P shotty, I am def going to lose some sleep, a lot of sleep.

S&W have to make one sooner or later right? I mean it only makes sense.

Bump!

So how do we make this happen? Or at least, how can we make our interest known? Anyone here know someone at S&W who might listen to an idea like this? How about a petition to show interest?

It sounds like a great idea to me.
