Default The Mysterious One Arm Shoulder Holster

Does this exist?

Reason I ask is that I've watched some old TV shows from the late 50's- early 60's and some of the pistol toters had shoulder holsters that only had one over the shoulder strap similar to (for lack of a better term) a purse.

Any of these really exist and if so, how the heck did they stay in place without sliding down?

Concentration?

No, I have a shoulder holster from the period. Actually probably earlier ('30s/'40s) and it has two elastic "strings" attatched. I've never quite figured out how they hooked up, but I think they went around the chest or something.

Here's a pic.....

Maybe similar to this?

In one of the Mike Hammer books, Mike is talking to some street punks, and stands in a way that allows them to see the strap of his shoulder holster going across his chest. Knowing that he was wearing a gun impressed them.

The two elastic straps go around your strongside shoulder by way of across your back.

The holters I saw looked similar to a modern one, but had NO straps going across the chest or back. The were literally over the shoulder and that was all. I couldn't see how one could've stayed in place.

Steve McGarrett from the original Hawaii 50 wore one. Never could figure out it stayed on his shoulder.

Sounds like the holster worn by Robert Ryan in the 1951 film "Flying Leathernecks".

My grandfather used the one arm shoulder holster for a long time. It is only designed to be worn as a undergarment. When you put a coat over the holster it keeps the shoulder loop in place. I would love to have one today.

Can't remember where I saw it but I saw one that had a strap across the back that attached around the belt on the strong side. From the front this would appear to be a 1 arm holster since you wouldn't see anything around the strong arm.

I cant even keep most of my suspenders on! I have some of these side clip suspenders from perry but they arent my favorites.
Perry SIde Clip Suspenders | SuspenderStore
I now wear hickmans. Best solution to holding up a gun belt and holster too.

Feral, why do you prefer the Hickmans to the Perry's? (I have Perry's but no experience with Hickmans.)

Default I have been

thinking about a shoulder holster that is also a pair of suspenders. But I am thinking of four straps (2 per side) with a single strap across the back to keep the suspenders from sliding off the shoulders. It still rolling around in the brain, the planning stage. I have just begun work on a shoulder holster for a rig I use form my 1911. I want to carry my 686 in a shoulder rig.

Would this be the bandoleir style? I have thought about one for my SBH, 7.5". I wanted something I could just throw on going out the door, in bear country.

Onomea; I wore perrys for almost 20 years. I started wearing them as they have the plastic clips and unlike metal clips they wouldnt tear up my car seats and furniture. But there is two things wrong with them. First the clip openings for the belt isnt wide enough to accomidate a thick gun belt as I used to wear on my job. 2nd, the clip in back almost always falls off in the john, makeing you have to struggle to put it back on. Kinda rough for a fat guy.
The hickman comes with either metal hooks (again bad for funiture), leather button hole grabbers, (probley okay but you will have to sew buttons on your pants) and the third one and best is a leather loop that is adjustable like a belt. You run your belt, even can adjust it for a large wide gun belt, and they cant unhook when you drop your pants in the can. Someone mentioned them on another site about a month ago and I ordered two pair. They worked out well so I ordered two more pair. I am a big fat guy with noassatall and they work out the best of any I ever had. I use the belt style hickmans shown.

If you remember the little "flap" that buttoned down on the shoulder of some uniform and some regular shirts year ago, I can't think of what they were called right now, the shoulder holster would go under this flap and with it buttoned down the holster stayed in place.

Don't you hate it when you can't think of a word now I'll be up all night trying to remember it. Dang.

I too have noticed McGarret's shoulder holster. I think it is a standard type but the "off-arm" strap has been removed because I think I saw slits on the shoulder strap for them.

For my SASS outfit I had black suspenders made with a derringer holster that rides just outside of my heart, I seen many for the top break Smith's. I also have worn these suspenders with one of my good suites with the derringer.

Early military shoulder holsters were made that way. Worn under a jacket, the jacket would keep it in place, also as another post mentioned the button down epaulet could be used as a retainer. I have a 1942 shoulder holster for a 1911 made that way. Later ones added a strap to go around the body and secure it more positively.

You can get that from Pacific Canvas and Leather. That's the M3 Holster. I have one, but truthfully, the M7 (the one I show in post #5) is more comfortable. The M3 rubs a groove in the side of your neck.

You can get 'em black or brown, right or left handed, and stamped either US or USMC.

Can you carry openly? I have an El Paso Threepesons rig for the 7.5-inch Super B. Like it a lot. But EPS or others can make you a shoulder rig for a gun that size. Look at their lists of which guns they'll adapt to which holsters. The photos are of just guns they consider typical.

Re shoulder holsters, I like the scenes in, "The Bridges at Toko-Ri", where Wm. Holden and the other USN Panther pilots wear the issued rigs for the Victory Model .38. I saw real USN aircrew wearing those at USAF bases where they stopped over. That was years after the movie was made, but the guns and shoulder holsters were the same.

BTW, in the book, James Mitchener mentioned that his hero pilot had fired his .38 just six times, in familarization. I'm pretty sure that my memory holds on that, and it seems typical of the military. When not flying in the Naval Reserve he was a Denver lawyer. If you haven't seen the movie, rent it or see clips on YouTube. If you're a knife nut, look at Harry's knife. I think it's a model that Western used to sell as a shark knife. The pilots seemed to buy their own knives. It was a few years yet before the Jet Pilot's Knife by Marble's was adopted and soon modified into the current airman's knife.

When I saw the Western brand knife on him, I thought that was shrewd work by the prop master, as Western was in Colorado, and Harry was from Denver. That's a really good war movie, with Grace Kelly as Harry's wife. The carrier pilots were trying to bomb a crucial North Korean supply bridge defended by a LOT of AAA guns. Harry's Panther (F-9F) was hit on a second attack, with unhappy results. Mickey Rooney played a helicopter pilot with discipline problems. Didn't realize that the USN had enlisted chopper pilots during the Korean war.

Does anyone recall the photo(s) of Elvis P. wearing a shoulder holster as a tanker during his Army service? I saw a couple.

I like the Doc Holiday shoulder holser, but at $185, I need to really want it. Lots of nice stuff. I also like the small of the back holster they got. Not for the SBH though.

He posted that it's for a Ruger Super Blackhawk!

But if he can open carry, a belt holster will be more comfortable, esp. for a gun of that size and weight.

I thought a belt holster might drag my pants down. Though this summer I started wearing suspenders, when I had a bunch of **** on my belt, they really make a difference.

I was looking for something, for when I was at my camp, and took the dogs for a walk in the woods. Was thinking something I would just throw over my shoulder, like a bandeloir style.

Maybe own its on belt, so I would just grab the gun belt and put it on.
