Default Crossdraw holster for 5" 686

I just put one of these on layaway and expect to have it in 2 or 3 months. I will want to carry it hunting with a bolt rifle. Since I am too old and feeble to do much hiking, I want something comfortable to sit with. There are plenty of 4" & 6", but I am having trouble finding a holster made specifically for a 5" gun. Any suggestions? Thanks.

The major holster manufacturers have always targeted the largest portions of the market with their product lines. For many years this has left a lot of people who chose a less popular handgun model or barrel length without much selection. It has also left a good market niche for lower volume producers, including myself.

In the L-frames S&W offers many barrel lengths and profiles. Same with the N-frames and K-frames. Those with 2.5", 3", 3.5", 4.25", 5" and a few others can look long and hard to find any holsters specifically made for their revolvers. Over the past 25 years or so quite a few makers have all but discontinued revolver holsters, other than a few very common models.

We continue to make them just about every day. Over 60% of our holster orders are for revolvers, and probably half are for the less common barrel lengths.

Look at El Paso Saddlery. They have several dedicated crossdraw holsters and others that can be ordered as crossdraw. I have their #2 in left hand crossdraw for my model 686 Pro Plus on order. It's due here next Wednesday (6 weeks from ordering) and I will let you know what I think of it when it gets here.

You rang?
I don't really have a holster line as such. Most everything I make is custom. Starts with a blank sheet of paper. Things like a chest holster.

For a single shot .410 pistol.

Matching holster and belt sets.

It's all hand stitched, cut, formed, dyed, burnished, buffed and finished

If you go with any of these guys who make holsters here posting above, you'll get more hands on cooperation via emails and PMs than with many well know holster makers. Features can be tweaked to fit your personal tastes and whatever personal touches.

El Paso Saddlery #2 Thumbreak for a S&W model 686 Pro Plus. Ordered as left hand crossdraw with basket weave stamping on 2/19/15, delivered on 4/1/15. I've been wearing it since arrived to break it in and to get used to it? It's comfortable considering the size & weight of a 686 but a Beltman gun belt helps a lot. No problems sitting, bending, or squatting while wearing it. Certainly not a concealment rig but I didn't get it for that anyway. Very pleased with the workmanship and quality of this holster.

hardtofindholsters on eBay

Not to take anything away from the fine craftsmen here, but options for an alternate source of supply are a good thing.

Lots of Don Hume new/old stock. I found a plain, black leather crossdraw for my 5" K frame here.

I have a simply rugged sourdough pancake I use for my 5" 63 during hunting season. It can be worn either side but I prefer cross draw. Plus if I have to use my sling I can carry on my right shoulder and don't worry about the stocks bumping one another. I am sure Ray from Lobo leather could work you one up also. And snubbyfan looks like he makes a fine holster also.
