A certain commentator says occasionally, "It ain't bragging if you can do it." Red Nichols has criticized my stuff before and I skip getting mad and think about what he's saying instead and wonder how to fix it. There are some great holster makers here whose work just knocks me out and who I get along great with. Turnerriver is my go to guru for holster history. Red is the same thing plus holster construction details. When I dug up a simple but scarce junk box Berns-Martin IWB holster, I really got the lowdown on this uncatalogued item from both of them.
Thanks, S&W Forum, for letting us share our stuff in this particular thread.

Red - I'm all ears. What my eyes can't see are where you recommend any form of actual critique, or point out how to fix it. From your coffee analogy you are not actually interested in trying to teach - so why say anything at all? Your taking a victim mentality in this post when you started the discussion in the first place. It isn't shooting the messenger to ask for a source of past cases - google does not turn up valid sources for such instances and many a maker could benefit from trying to diagnose such a catastrophic failure. Without being able to verify a case it's like the popular insurance commercial and the french model.

Big makers obviously have larger resources to funnel into research and design. The problem for someone trying to gain knowledge in this industry is you can't just go to one and say "I want to learn the why, not the what." Been there, tried that. That leaves interested parties little choice minus a few various books, video sources, and a lot of trial and error.

Safety is obviously a very real priority, there is no prize for second place.

Red said his first name is Richard...but I think he's earned the distinction of the nickname Dick. Somehow that just seems more fitting. For all you holster makers, amateur or otherwise, thanks for sharing your pics. You guys do some awesome work

Sorry that I am so picture posting challenged, or I would post my most recent IWB holster. I think it turned out very well and I am proud of the workman ship. I make my own holster based on what think will be comfortable for me. while working on "my idea of a holster' I think about retention, comfort durability, stitching and rivet placement. I have made some holsters that didn't work out and some that worked very well. what I make I make for myself. everything is hand cut sewn, and burnished. http://smith-wessonforum.com/attachm...d=1442602688ut,.
I did find a way to post a picture after all. this is my take on a snap on holster or use clips.

Scouring the internet for references to this wrongful death lawsuit leaving a widow! I just cannot seem to locate it

I shall assume this is another fantasy of reds until directed to evidence of fact, as I do his assertion that Texans somehow mistake him for an Australian as a result of their residence in the Lone Star state.

I shall now retire to my library to continue my extensive work (soon to be published) on the correlation between fantasy spy novel fans and hot air balloons.

I guess I'll jump back in here and show a couple of items (non gun related) that I made for my daughters. I've got one more to go but here is the first two.
I call them doodad boxes.
For the mods, this is not a promotional ad but if you want to delete it go right a head. I am not looking for business.

I love that box! On the topic of non gun gear with my wife being a veterinarian, honey do's often come in for the four-legged companions in our lives. She's been asking me to make a chest harness for a little while now and I finally cave back at the beginning of the summer. As you can see, Annie is thrilled to be modeling it. I want to make an addition with a waist strap as some point and some saddle bags to tote a little weight around hiking. There is a mountain man museum up in TN that shows a set up made for a German Shepperd which was trained to go down the mountain and retrieve the owners grocery's, list and payment in the bags when he arrived at the general store.

Honey-doer, whipped since "I do"

Not many people know how to "take" Mr. Nichols. I don't know him personally, but I've heard many things about him as well as reading what he has to say on other forums and internet sites. When I was making holsters years ago, he was one of the first holster "Gurus" I heard of.

Two things I know about Red Nichols from my reading:
First, there are a few folks at the top of the holster industry that might be his equal, but none better.
Second, he is one incorrigible S*B.

Don't bother trying to understand the man, but trust me, he's forgotten more about leather and holsters than most people will ever know (although he'd never admit to forgetting.) Some of us, myself included, could use a few more tips from the Master before y'all go trying to run him off.

Well Mr rednichols I thought I was the rudest guy here but you just made me look like a Girl scout. Can I pat that hump on your back or can you reach it all by yourself?? Bet you can. I see you are from Down Under. May be you should reach back there and pull the plug and let some of that gas out. Just sayin.
I'm ready for my punishment now Mr. Gorilla Sir.

If full coverage is the desire you may consider a full flap holster so that you can still get your mitts on the guns grip. May just be the picture though. Is the buffalo your using a veg tan? Wow. I don't know anything about making holsters, but I do know that I've been sick all week, feeling like the dickens, and after reading all of these posts, and seeing some great leather work, I feel a lot better.

Well, part of feeling better comes from laughing so hard that tears were actually coming out of my eyes. I hope that I never offend anyone on this forum, cause most of you aren't just great at holster making, you can sure come up with some of the greatest put downs I've ever heard.

Seriously, I have seen some really wonderful holster designs, and beautifully executed leather work in this thread. Good work all!!!

I was too broke (or too cheap) to spend $100 for a good holster. So, I read a few books; watched a few videos and made my own:

There are a few more, but this illustrates that anyone can do it.
