I don't have a box of holsters laying around, but I have very
neatly stowed two sweeping compound drums full of them. I never pass up a quality holster at show or yard sale that is
way under priced. I couldn't give a hoot what some "expert"
likes. A couple weeks ago I bought a Lawrence holster for a
Broom Handle Mauser. Never know when one will turn up. I
am eletist, I don't do plastic or nylon. I'm 6'x 160lb x 32" waist
and I carry pancake cross draw, even with N frames. Only
thing that bothers me is flimsy holsters that want to turn
over and twist belt.

I hope you get that Broom Handle.
And we will need a picture.
Never saw one in a cross draw holster before!

I try to read as much as I can around here and can appreciateopinions on hand tooled leather and such. This has been my carry rig since 1994 (well, I did replace the holster once or twice when the safety lever ate through), works perfectly for my needs and is right comfortable here in the swamp (90 degrees out today). I'll keep on until I find a better rig. Joe

Well thanks for coming back BC38. Funny, but I didn't notice the "thumb" either, at first.
My efforts to "ruffle your aplomb" a bit did not seem to have much effect; so your blood pressure was likely not as high as I, (and Hapworth) feared.
I am remiss in not using the little emotions faces, or what ever they are called, myself.
Certainly we could all do with a few more smiling faces around.
And yeah,....as slow-witted as I am, I usually pick up on that capital letter inference. (seems like I get more of that, than I once did. )

Strange this same topic came up over brandy in the Club's Library last evening........most came down against IWB carry because it hides to much of the hand tooling......... but the topic soon changed to which engraved O/U for grouse in the Scottish Highlands..........next weekend.
Must run the Limo is waiting...... and I need to check on the Chinese overnight markets.........................

I use a Remora Clip holster IWB for my EDC. It's cheap, it works for me and I ware it all day and am not the least bit uncomfortable. Often, I forget that it is on.
I'm sure that I am not alone in my choice.
I too have a drawer full of other holsters.
Just ware what works for you.

Bam-Bam: "Which over/under"? I say old boy, there is no question as to which, the question is which Purdey?
Remember what we recite at Club (Brooke's of course) "Purdey for grouse, Boss for pheasant, Woodward for duck, Rigby for lion, Westley Richards for elephant." It's as familiar as "Twinkle, Twinkle"

Pawwwdun me whilst I button up my pantses. As far as boxers vs briefs, I believe Chester and the twins deserve the freedom that comes with wearing shorts to work this date as the Courts are closed so I shall abstain from either . Now I'm off to the tailor as my bespoke Columbia fishing shirt in marsh grass pattern is ready for final fitting.

Yeah I can usually spot such efforts and I don't generally get too ruffled. You have to be actually TRYING to insult me to get me going. Blatant disrespect is one thing will cause me to lose my cool. Otherwise, I stay pretty chill.

No implication that you are slow - in fact quite the opposite. An acknowledgement that that I believed you understood more than what you were letting on

Some of the dilemmas you fellows find yourselves in, truly make me guffaw with mirth. Which drawers to wear;...which is the best holster;... indeed !?
Let me relate some real-world problems I just encountered.
So, I instruct James to bring around the "S" class Benz, (after quite a bit of dreadful agonizing on my part); over using it, or my 1962 Ferrari 250 GT to get to the "Basin".
My intentions to take 30 or so close friends on a little sea jaunt on my newly acquired little boat, you fellows may know of her, named: The Rising Sun. (Feel free to goggle her if you wish, but please don't zoom too close to the fore castle, as the ivory inlaid mahogany is not yet finished.)
So now to this awful predicament I find myself in. And, I don't want to come across as self-absorbed, for surely most of you have encountered life's little set-backs like this too; though I hardly doubt to the extent to which I find myself.
You see, James, after a solemn promise there would be no rain, was allowed to open the sun roof on my "S". I am sure most all can now see the horror I had to endure.....YES !!! the incompetent allowed us to go into a rain shower, my ascot no doubt has several drops of wetness, and oh dear but I do so hate a soggy ascot.
Hold on, this is only the surface of my distress. My captains cap is now ruined,at least six drops of rain, and no less for my yachting blazer which is a mess; and I know all of you will feel the pain with me, for I can not, just can NOT board my ship in this condition. So the trip for today is off.
I will now have to retire to my summer home and have Emmanuella give me another deep-muscle message just to try to lift my spirits a bit. I hardly ever require three in one day; but today's ordeal has just set me back.
I know all you will know just where I'm coming from in that regard ! Life is just not fair sometimes.

You gotta be kiddin' me!!! Why the heck do you think there are so many holster styles, shapes, configurations, colors, and materials out there???
Simple....because one size don't fit all!!! Sheesh! Gimme a break!
Just so we're all on the same page as to what the OP is referring to, here's a picture of what constitutes a "slim athletic build."
Now, please excuse me while I slip into my designer Wrangler jeans, my scuffed up hand-stitched Tony Lama work boots, and my sweat-stained custom-made 10x beaver Stetson, grab my hand-crafted manure fork and go outside and shovel out the corrals.

Manure fork ! Manure fork, why my goodness, that what this thread has needed all along......
Hard to beat the feel of a good manure fork in your hands; in a well used horse stall, with that pleasing ammonia smell so strong it's watering your eyes down to the quick.

I too dumpster dive at real LGS'. Sometimes I buy a holster and look for the pistol I don't yet own that will fit it. I have a box full of holsters, rifle sling, grips and other stuff elitist snobs just gave away.
I do not have a 4" M-10 or I might be interested. But I am not of the slim athletic build. I am of the large athletic build.
When I was 13 my paternal Grandfather passed. The grandsons were to be pallbearers. Dad took me to get my first suit that didn't come from the Sears catalog. Dad taught me something that day. Try it on before you buy it. This alone has saved me many wrong purchases like shoes, clothes, LE Sam Browne, hats and assorted other items.
Happy trails going forward.

I think all or most of the replies are right on. But I also think that what 336A is talking about is the fact that there are people who wouldn't use a holster if it isn't made of leather. There are others who like himself have found that plastic/synthetic works best for themselves. I admit that I don't like synthetics very well and like most shooters who have been at it for close to 50 years, I have quite an assortment of holsters that I either don't have the gun for anymore or I found they didn't work as well as I thought they might. About a year ago I ordered a pancake design from a fairly well known maker for my 629-1 3". It didn't work for me worth damn because the gun sits too high and falls away from me. But I didn't realize it was going to do that due to it's design. I've used pancakes before and they worked OK for lightweight semi-auto's but a revolver is a horse or a different kind with a very short barrel. Anyway, I didn't blame anyone else for my folly. If liking leather over synthetics is elitist then maybe I am. But as has been said, if someone asks for my opinion I tell them what....I...think. I don't tell them which is better for them, only what I personally like and works for me. If someone takes my advise and then finds out they don't like what they ended up with....sorry. But maybe the person asking should have tried some of the stuff he finds people using before he bought anything.

I read this as most people missed the point of the OP and got their hackles up for any of a number of reasons.
Jagger said it in a song, "he can't be a man because he doesn't smoke the same cigarettes as me." I used to see far too much of that in the sporty car world, I see it the gun world as well.
All too often we hear, "If your holster isn't made of unicorn foreskins, you're wasting your money." If all you can afford is a nylon holster from Walmart and it works for you, go for it. If you are happy with your Rossi .38, great.
The OP wasn't muttering about big boxes of holsters or grips or hearing protectors that some of us accumulate. It was about tendency for many in a specialized community to denigrate lower cost options for gear.
At least that's how I read it. YMMV.
