Thinking about a Simply Rugged Pancake holster, have a quick question.

I've been using an El Paso Saddelry pancake holster to carry my M28 in and I hate it because if I draw my gun my belt pulls it shut so it takes 2 hands to reholster. I've seen a couple of pictures of them not on the belt and the holster stays open, so will it on a belt?

And if anybody has any better suggestions on a concealed carry holster for a 4" N frame that doesn't cost an arm and a leg or take a year to get I'm open to suggestions. The other holster I was thinking about is a Desantis Speed Scabbard.

I have a simply rugged pancake for my 3in N frames. No problem to reholster. Just a slight twist of the gun and it slides right back in. Liked it well enough to by one for my 3in K frame. Both are great.

I have 2,one for my 4" N frames & one for my "J" frames.I'm going to get one for the "K" frames.They work very well.

Look for pancakes that are of the assymetrical style. That is, most of the pocket is moulded to the outside. Aker, for example, makes Flatsiders done this way. They'r not a new concept being almost as old as the first pancakes, but they are by no means standard, either.

This method keeps the holster from being pulled shut when on a belt and the pistol drawn. The original pancake patent was for a left side or right side use so was symmetrical.

Simply Rugged Holsters

Have one for my 624, 3". Like it well enough to ask Santa for one for my 66, 2 1/2". Great leather at a great price.

Depends on what you call an "Arm & a Leg".........

Kramer's horsehide OW Belt Scabbard (w/ FBI cant) is the best in the business as far as I am concerned and that is what I use. I no longer like retention straps, snaps, velcro, screws, springs, blah blah blah for proper retention - but like my holsters to naturally and correctly retain the gun with no extra parts because they are built right and made out of the best materials available. Kramer Leather fits that bill for me. Again, not a cheap holster (about $125 or so) but will last a lifetime if not abused. The best I've ever had in OWB holsters.

Simply Rugged makes some great products, and like the name says they are simple and rugged, I have them for : model 36, 2 1/2" 686, 1911 4",1911 5". I also wear their belt to hold them up with. Oh yes I also have their speedloader and mag pouches. You can't go wrong with their leather.

These are fine holsters, especially for users with an ample waist measurement. If you are skinny you might be more comfortable with an asymmetric flat-backed design which does not cause half of the revolver to dig into your waist. The Simply Rugged Cattleman might be one but I have not used this model. The most comfortable holster I have found for my bony hips is the Mernickle concealment holster (PS6?).

This is my Simply Rugged for my SP101. OWB or can be IWB with loops. I think it's a quality product. Also like the inside leather, smoother than some I've seen.

I do have one for a 3" 24-3. Being an N Frame it is heave, but this holster makes it easy to carry. I can forget I have it on. I can usually just slide the barrel in and then it will go in easily. Carrying at 4 O'clock position, I can't get my left hand on the holster if I wanted to assist it in.

I have carried N frame revolvers and 1911 guns on horseback and on an ATV on the ranch in Simply Rugged holsters for several years without a worry.

They aren't fancy but they keep a gun close and secure.

I have 2, one for a SBH and one for my SRH Toklat. Order the Chesty Puller harness in addition to your holster. Converts your belt holster to a chest holster when needed. One harness is all you need for multiple Simply Rugged pancake holsters.

Ryan Grizzle (OWB Holsters - R Grizzle Leather) reinforces the mouth with an extra layer of leather. Others sew in a steel band, but mostly for IWB holsters. I have several revolver holsters by Alessi, which aren't reinforced but asymmetrical. As described above, a little twist with finger pressure on one of the lips gets the job done.

Mostly it takes practice. You have to spread the opening enough to clear the cylinder. Sometimes it works best to have your index finger alongside the cylinder to push the lip aside, and your thumb on the hammer for safety (and leverage).

Alessi holsters (CQB and Belt Slide) cover the recoil shield. To draw smoothly, I pry a bit with my thumb and pull somewhat outward on the grip. Again, practice.

Another vote for Simply Rugged. EDC is N frame 44 special or SA 1911 in 45acp. These holsters have held up well for both and no trouble when holstering.

I carry a 4" N-frame .44 mag in mine with no problems.

Sometimes it feels like enough leather to make a saddle though...and sorta resembles one.

I bought this Simply Rugged for 2 inch J frame and it fits the Ruger LCR.
The leather is ridged enough that the holster does not collapse when gun is drawn and makes it easy to reholster.
I also like the Street Combat from El Paso, it is lined and made from stiff leather that keeps it from collapsing when the gun is drawn.
