A BRILL FOR LUCKY B
A while back my friend Red said I am a lucky b------ and he
was right. Here's another example.
I believe my good friend turnerriver was putting things back
together after the hurricane and came across a Brill he thought
he could live without. He remembered that I had been looking
for a Brill so he sent it to me.
It was made for S&W's M&P so it's a perfect fit for my model 10.
Here are a few photos left to right:
Front view with model 10 on board.
Back view.
Top view.
Side view.
Brill & model 10 on $30 belt. Knife is a Marbles Damascus.

Indeed you could/should change your name from crazyphil to luckyphil :-).
And we know it's by Rabensburg (so 1932-1955) because . . . ?

Nice leather! That John is a nice guy too! Only sold/traded him a thing or two but he's a real class act.

I would like to change to Lucky, but afraid the red tape would
overwhelm me, and I would be kinda like the Lucky I show here.
I know it's a Rabensburg because the world's foremost authority on all things Brill schooled me about round vs square muzzles.

Hmmm, I might have to start making Brillalike belts for friends. Your new Brill doesn't look right on that plain, unbilleted belt :-).

I have a black basketweave that will look better with the Brill-Persons
holster. I got that 1.25" belt because the Chic Gaylord Combat Speed
Scabbard has 1.25" loop, but the Brill does also. Maybe that would
date the Brill back toward the end of Newt's holster making days in
the 50s? I remember belts were quite narrow in the 50s and 60s.
Some even more narrow than the 1.25". I didn't wear belts in the
40s. Levis with no belt. Seems like men, at least working men like
my Dad, wore wider belts in the 40s.

Remembering that authentic Brills were made for the Rangers as concealment holsters, on a narrow billeted belt worn just below the pants belt -- so, not through the pants loop. Here's just one image, that may or may not be a Brill (it looks quite like a Voss, which was a knockoff of the Brill, because of the pointy muzzle shape):
ranger burnett (1).jpg
So: 1-1/4" to 1-1/2" for the Brill's belt tunnels in general, because they were created for the Rangers to hide. But not worn on belts through the pants loops, so that trend up and down is not relevant as we assume, because it is today.

The Voss:
7 voss orange (3).jpg
Voss was a saddler in Orange TX and one of a half dozen makers, including Myres, who cloned the Brill but with their own small changes. It was Sessums who got the closest, and he added some nice touches of his own including internal 'welting' to provide standoffs for the mag button on the auto.
Which reminds, that I only recently realised the significance of a 1916 patent I encountered some 30 years ago: what we now know is the classic Shelton-Payne Arms holster. It included a second panel inside, that was quite like the outer pocket, the purpose of which was to provide a standoff for the mag button. To W.H. Shelton himself, who had formed and then sold off the original El Paso Saddlery Company; which immediately failed whilst Shelton prospered selling arms to both sides of the conflict with Mexico (it was Villa's fear that he wouldn't get his guns from Shelton-Payne that caused the incursion into USA that caused the Mexican Puntive Expedition led by Patton and allegedly involved Tom Threepersons). Small world.

Oh no!
crazyphil, you've come down with a Brillness!
It's a proper textbook case too and fits a proper side arm.

It seems in those old days gone by that mens trousers waistline was
higher than in more recent times. Like clear up above the hips kinda
in line with the umbilica. The gunbelt being just below the trousers
belt would still ride high enough that they could conceal under the
suit jacket.
By the way McGilvray I not only have a case of Brillness, but I think
I'm coming down with Brill-Persons syndrome. A double whammy.

Just in case you are seriously considering a Brilllike belt
for your friend-----luckyphil is 42" to center hole, and
1.25" loop on my Brill.

How's this belt. Does it look a little more appropriate
for the Brill than the plain one?

Skived and spliced welt stack , as many as 3 on late , only 1 on the early . Welt stitching at mouth finishes with a turn back of 3 stitches instead of the 2 found on early holsters . The obvious ones ,..... now remind those of us still learning of the not so obvious .
Cuff stitching will be different also .

Thanks for the great photos, Phil. Every aspect is visible. But how many layers in the welt? I forgot what Red said and I see that extra one on the bottom. Why make it wider on the bottom when i’s not for a Colt SAA That has the ejector housing?

There are 2 layers of welt on this one. The inward layer is skived
toward the muzzle while the outer layer is skived to increase in
width as the inward layer decreases.
By the time the welt gets to the muzzle the two
layers are the same width together as they were at the top.
The inward layer ends at the muzzle and the outward layer
goes on across the bottom of the muzzle as a single piece.
(Hope my description is understandable)

I took your suggestion seriously. I have a vintage 4 piece
buckle set on the way. When it gets here I'll clean it up,
polish it with Brasso, take a picture, and post it here just
for you. Thanks for the suggestion.

Here it is with 3 of the 4 piece buckle set in place.
The tip needs some work. Maybe beyond repair.
It's vintage Mexican.
