Just discovered this wonderful thread. What a great idea. It’s raining here today, so I just spent the last hour going through it page by page. Now I’m going to get a dish towel to clean my drool off the bar.
Don’t ever stop!

I believe Royal Eubank's work would qualify for this beautiful category.
The first 2 from the left were made when he was doing business as
Eubanks Leather 1939-1949.
The third from left was made later after he had gone into busines
as Idaho Leather in 1954.
The black one is carved and laced. The other two are stamped and laced.

My Model 10 & Model 36 holsters are about as plain as you can get...guess I'll have to pony up for some tooled leather for my 28!

Past Post Enjoyment
J. R. WEEMS;
I've been reviewing past posts, and found a couple of yours, that I enjoyed, and would like more information about them. - First the beautiful #719 Heiser holster shown in post #150 - Page #3, of this Holster Beauty Contest thread. You mentioned that you had a .38 revolver coming, that you hoped that the holster would fit. Did it? I believe that that holster was made to fit a S&W Mod. 34, .22/.32 Kit gun. - The second beautiful holster, that you posted, that caught my eye is the El. Paso Shoulder holster, made to fit your 1945 K-22, Post #142, page #3, of this thread also. The beautiful holster shown has a slot across the holster at about where the cylinder fits inside of the holster, but part of the holster is covered, and It's not clear to me how the retaining strap system works, could you enlighten me about that? It looks as tho the holster is lined. Is it suede , or pig skin? - Thanks.

Chub- well now, I just dug these out and checked. The Heiser secures a model 31 (32S&W Long), just fine. The 38S&W I frame is a tad loose, but it works. The holster is not lined, and the strap goes Behind the trigger guard on both guns. Thanks to all for interest. A side note here: due to another thread, I surveyed my gun leather and quickly decided some TLC was needed in a bad way. Went to work and all leather is now in tip top shape. Check the thread out about cleaning up your leather. Well worth the while and time. I spent a couple weeks at the project. on anothe note, anyone ever rawhide lace a holster?? I'd like to try that with the little feild holster by Hunter that came with the I frame. Can acquire the rawhide but need to study the process. The Hunter was a bit dry, but now looks to be brand new, intact looks BETTER than brand new. ANyone ever done such a thing???

When I got this old Eubanks Pioneer Leather holster several of the
rawhide laces were broken and it was in pretty poor shape. So first
I laced it with a black lace which was too small. So I removed the
black and tried this buckskin.
I know it is not a very good job, but it is an improvement over the black.
I want to try again with rawhide. I've been told you have to get the
rawhide wet before threading it through the holes. Seems like that
would really take a special technique.
I'm going to search u-tube. There should be a "how to" video somwhere.
By the way, here is a Hunter that I acquired recently that had been
laced. Don't know if it was done at the factory or by a previous
owner, but it's a nice job.

CP- check with Tandy leather-- they have the rawhide and I am sur tools to do this. I intend to do so after new years. got their catalog a couple weeks ago. first thing I thought of was soak the rawhide. Yo already have the holes so it should be easier than starting from scratch as I will : GOOD LUCK!!

With all this about fitting I thought a photo was in order. Stocks on this Mdl 31 are vintage stag, acquired from a fine ember here.

I found a video on u-tube. The title is The Old Timer Lacing the holster.
It's quite basic, but a place to start.

On the subject of lacing:
Far left below, lacing in kangaroo by my friend Al at Chisholm's Trail.
2nd from left, lace is buckskin, not so good lacing by Phil.
3rd from left, intricate lacing by? Holster simply marked MEXICO.
4th from left, Lawrence lacing on the holster, since sold,
shown on the cover of my RENOWNED GUN LEATHER.

There is a lot of purty holsters but I can't help to notice I don't see many
signs of wear or use on them. I have a lot of Lawrence & Bianchi belts and
holsters. They are well taken care of but will not be mistaken for new. I
have had to have several repaired and stitching redone. I guess the fancy
holsters are for display. What do you actually carry your gun in?

Myres basketweave thumb snap holster.
I ordered this set from S.D. Myres when I was a teenager and still use it now and then.
A Lawrence holster that I carry my .41 Magnum Blackhawk in.

While this does fit, as suggested by those in the know, it just seems like a lot of holster for such a piece. I have to agree, not much use shown on a lot of the leather here, but use doesn't have to mean abuse. Especially at the cost of good leather these days. I also have leather that showed some hard use, but after my leather cleaning session, it almost all looks pretty good. I for one don't do the kind of work that would wear on a holster and when I did, I took off my gun belt.

A COUPLE SD MYERS
A couple from SD myers. This one marked SD MYERS , TEX - holds a 32/20 but shows no sign of ever having a strap of any kind. ?? Vintage is unkown to me.
This one is marked SD MYERS, ELPASO TEX. Strap is a bit too long for anything I have at the moment. I considered adding a second snap but am somewhat reluctant to do so. No idea what gun it might of been made for?? Some version of a Colt perhaps??

This elegant and functional Berns-Martin is in outstanding plus condition. It fits either a 3.5" or 4" N frame.

Here's another one of mine that I happen to have a decent shot of. This is an unmarked example of the Texas Ranger / Brill style which is a perfect fit for my ca. '37 HD. I got this one from turnerriver - probably 12 or 15 years ago.

I don't know how I could overlook this one, but this thread ain't over til
it's over, so here it is. When Red Nichols re-created Tom Threeperson's
personal holster he gave me the #1 prototype. He also made, and gave
me, the ranger style belt.
Here it is with my Peacemaker replica:

Smith & Wesson had relationships with both Myres and Lawrence as your ad and this one show.
Lawrence was a S&W distributor as this cutaway card shows.
Myres had a couple of pages in 1940’s & ‘50’s catalogs devoted to equipment for the .357 Magnum revolver.
Thanks for posting that advertisement.

Here is an interesting one I picked up at a show a few years ago. It is simply marked Faust Maker Pasadena California on the rear and 44M R. When I saw it I took an educated guess that it was made for a Ruger .44 Magnum, the original and not the Super Blackhawk and it turned out to be a perfect fit for an Old Model Blackhawk with 6.5" barrel.
The stamping pattern is unusual. It appears to be as well made as a Lawrence from the 1950's or 1960's. I have not been able to find out much about the maker, I seem to recall he was an active or retired police officer ?

Just picked up my first custom carry holster from Wicho Customs in Oklahoma City. And the custom stocks to match, also from Wicho. I love the look and feel of Stingray! Picture is flipped because I used the forward facing camera on my phone. It's actually right handed.

Fabulous holster, handsome pic! The particular pattern used for the Mexican carving suggests it is one of the earliest, unmarked Brill-brand holsters. I have images of several different Brills with the pattern including a Brill-marked holster that is attributed to Butch Cassidy (unlikely because he was supposedly dead by Brill's opening in 1912); and the construction details are the same as the earliest Brill-marked holsters.

Not the best pic of the holster because the pic is of the gun, but here's my 29-3 Lew Horton Overrun and its russet El Paso Saddlery custom crossdraw.

I only own two holsters that are not used as every day carry ,pretty or not . The only reason they are not getting used is they are for 4" barrel guns and I currently do not own any other than my m34 which does have a nice Heiser . Pretty , clean and not beat looking does not have to mean unused .

Thanks Red. If more photos (with higher detail) would allow a more positive ID, let me know. And advise me of anything specific I should look for and focus on. A private message would be fine.

Paul;
I've been reviewing the great pictures shown in this thread, and noticed my previous comment, and compliment to you, about your only qualified entry into this thread. I offered a George Lawrence holster, that I rescued, and modified, for comparison to your holster's style, etc. I neglected to mention the beautiful engraved, S&W Mod. 27 3.5" revolver that you showed with it. That 3.5" 27, has just the right amount of tasteful engraving, to suit me, and is wearing beautiful, grips. Are they elephant Ivory? My compliments on that elegant combination. I admit that the S&W 3.5" 27, is my favorite Revolver, and the Geo. Lawrence Co, is my favorite holster maker. Your revolver of this combination, is also 'Elegant', and has just the right amount of 'Pizzazz'. Thanks for tantalizing me with them.

A couple more Charles Bluemel holsters that I carry some when I’m out in the woods. The model 10-5 was my first Smith & Wesson, a birthday present when I turned 16. The holster is lightly etched S&W K 4.95 on the back.
Regards,
turnerriver
This one fits a Colt Government Model.

With a little bad luck, this phrase will be on my tombstone: "always show the back" :-).
Turnerriver has supplied me with images front and back of your holster; it's definitely an early Brill although unmarked with the name. I suppose we could theorize that it was made before Brill started operations in 1912, given that the holster was created in 1907 in nearby Lagrange TX; leaving a five-year gap.
August himself was working for W.T. Wroe, one of a few saddlers in Austin, at the turn of the century and Wroe married, in 1909, well-known Ranger Capt. Leander McNelly's widow of 30 years, Carey. And the Ranger who commissioned the design, Capt. Hughes, left Austin early 1907 and was forced out in 1915; so we've every reason to believe that the holster was made before Brill struck out on his own by acquiring Kluge Bros. On the other hand, late Brills were absolutely known to have been made both with, and without the Brill mark at the same time, by the same man: we have an image of N.J. Rabensburg in a 1959 newspaper article showing him making both versions.
Early and late Brills are easy to tell apart. From the front, a late Brill will have a second return stitch at the top of the welt; and will have at least two welts on revolver versions. From the backside the cuff will be attached with twin, mirror-image hand stitching sets with 'fish hooks' at each end:
ricky brill (4).jpg A late, from the front; notice the additional stitch at the top of the welt, that returns back towards the muzzle.
bmcgilvray brill (2).jpg A late, from the backside; always the exact same number of stitches at left (next to the main fold) and at right varies only by one stitch from one holster to the next.
brill saa (14).jpg An early (yours looks like this) with the straight stitch holding down one end of the cuff (c/b machine stitched) next to the welted seam; and a simpler hand stitch next to the main fold of the holster.
Don't miss the significance of how close the cuff stitching on the backside is to the fold that forms the top of the belt loop: these were made for very narrow belts even by today's standards; as narrow as 1". Beginning with Hughes, Texas Rangers were required to wear their holstered SAAs on trousers belts, high on the waist, even if not through pants loops (which were very, very new by 1907). A Brill and its copies are very small, thin, light holsters and not at all what we think of for a 'western' holster.

So, I posted on this thread before with my 640 nd in a tan carved holster and thought I would post another J frame in a black carved and laced rig. It is out of Mexico with my 36 nd 3" gun riding in it.

Here are three working holsters. If I remember the order, the top is a Nightengale copy of the Avenger style for a 1911. The middle is a Bianchi 5BH for a 4” N frame. I used this one so much I had to get it resewn. The little one is a Safariland equivalent of the 5BH for a 3” J frame. This last one is a new replacement for an older similar style that got sold to a fellow LE.
The most used is the N frame as I carry that daily.

Here are my fancy holsters for the same handguns. I like the style of A W Brill. These are mere copies. Same order as above.

In my semi-professional opinion, your thinking is correct.
Most of them were sewn with a machine.
