Default Texas Ranger rig in movie "Wild Horses" (Female Texas Ranger).......

In the movie "Wild Horses" starring Robert Duvall, a female Texas Ranger "Samantha Payne" (played by Robert Duvall's Wife, Lucianna Pedrazza) investigates a cold case involving the disappearance of a teenager on a ranch in Texas. In true Texas Ranger style, she continues investigating even when things start going south....

"Samantha Payne" cairries a 1911 with ornate grips and a floral holster and belt in the movie, and one scene gives a closeup of the pistol and rig for those of us who like those sort of things. And, she's kind of easy on the eyes if you know what I mean.

Here's the only image I could find:

It's a worthy movie, with Robert Duvall you can't go wrong.

Don't know who the maker is.
Though less ornate, I really like the 1911 rig Nick Nolte wears in "Extreme Prejudice". Never been able to find out who the maker is...my only guess is El Paso Saddlery...
If anyone knows would appreciate the answer.

jem102 - I believe your guess about Nick Nolte's holster in Extreme
Prejudice is correct. I believe it is a 1930 Austin model made by
El Paso Saddlery. I don't know who made the one for Wild Horses.

No idea on the Wild Horses rig. i do have some insight into the Extreme Prejudice rig. Joaquin’s rig was built by Texas Ranger Tol Dawson, who built quite a few rigs for many LEOs. When preparing for the movie, Nick had a rig custom built to match Joaquin’s.

I have one of Joaquin’s personal Dawson holsters, a gift from Bart Skelton, shown here with another one of Dawson’s holsters holding Bart’s 1911. The second photo shows the holster worn by Nolte.

Much appreciated! Of all the Ranger and Wilde Bunch rigs I have seen the one used by Nolte has always impressed me. Especially the scene where he is walking down the dusty road to the saloon and the ultimate showdown...

I take it there is no practical way to obtain one of these?

I would imagine that Doc Barranti, or any other custom maker, could craft one for you.

Did some checking on Joaquin Jackson. He was quite the man's man as it were. There is a live interview with him on a Texas PBS station (Texas Monthly Talks | Joaquin Jackson | Season 3 | Episode 19 | PBS) and he is EXACTLY what you would imagine from a career Ranger... Polite, courteous, intelligent and able to drop you like a stone in a heartbeat if needed. I watched this and it becomes overtly, literally blatantly obvious why our beloved country has turned from the "way" and lost its bearing...the Joaquin's are far and few in between today... If you listen closely he gives the indication he viewed his law enforcement oath as before God and gave most the chance to choose an honest course though they would need to pay the price of corrections.
Really appreciate Doc contributing this information. I have made many a mistake and tried to learn from them and not be a repeat offender as to how I treat other people. It provides an old man some comfort that his life of trying to do the "right thing" was not completely in vain though it pales to the courage and fortitude of someone like this Ranger.
Thanks for reading along all.

I have no interest in holsters and know little about them, but was recently reading the Joaquin Jackson/ Texas Ranger autobiography. He said local saddlemaker Jose Pena in Alpine, TX made three 1911 rigs for Nolte for the movie. Perhaps El Paso Saddlery made him some more?

Slightly off topic, but since the Joaquin Jackson book has already been mentioned... there's another book, published fairly recently, "Cult Of Glory" by Doug Swanson. It's about the Texas Rangers from the early beginnings to present day.

Good book, well researched and heavily documented. It deals with subject matter that Jackson barely touched upon in his book in several places, but he did not go into detail, even though he knew the story well. This was obviously Jackson's intent and I don't say that as a criticism.

Law enforcement and attitudes toward law enforcement have changed drastically in the last fifty years. Times, people, circumstances, and outlooks are much different than they once were. "Cult Of Glory" covers all this pretty well.

Thank you all, this is great stuff! What's the old saying; "Hope springs eternal". "I" find learning and understanding about what came before inspirational and clarifying.

The book is considered revisionist. The book purposefully takes a tack against anything positive that has ever been said of the Rangers.

I don't know that I'd call it revisionist and one needn't agree with all that's in it. While the author does depict the organization in a largely non-favorable light, it's also a presentation in an alternate perspective. Again, very different times and attitudes. Judging yesterday's acts using today's standards doesn't work well and doesn't provide an accurate account of anything.

Certainly the Rangers have done much good over a long time. As I mentioned, Joaquin Jackson touched upon some of the negative aspects in his book. He was no doubt well aware of the situation and what he said was far from a condemnation of all Texas Rangers or the organization.

It's purty on screen....kinda short on the grip clearance for a carry rig.

Have not read his book...

Not to speak ill of the dead,

I just do not garner a very high opinion of the late Mr. Jackson.

I guess I gave a poor explanation. The information you were looking for was in post #9. I'm not a big Joaquin Jackson fan either, but the answer to your question has little to do with that.
