Default Holster Recommendations S&W 629 6"

First post - Been browsing the forum for several hours. Lots of good information on the 629's so thanks.

Today I purchased a 629-4 6" in excellent condition from a local shop. The price was a little better than what they are selling for online so I'm happy with the purchase. Now I'm looking at my various options for holsters.

I bought the revolver primarily to carry in the woods. I spend a lot of time in the mountains of Washington and Idaho. I fly fish, drift fish, hike, mountain bike, pack, and camp as far from civilization as my old bones will allow. It is not uncommon for me to see signs of, or encounter, Mountain Lion, Black Bear, Grizzly, and Wolf. Came across fresh Grizzly scat and encountered a Wolf just last week while in the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness. (see attached pictures).

I want a holster which can be worn / drawn from horse back, biking, sitting in the drift boat, and hiking. It should work with everything from a t-shirt to full winter clothes while wearing a fishing vest and/or backpack.

I'm considering the Craft Holsters nylon roto shoulder holster.
Nylon Roto Shoulder Holster - Craft Holsters(R)

I'm open to any thoughts, recommendations, or suggestions. It would be perfect if someone has experience with this specific holster or a similar one.

I love the way the 629 feels in my hand and can't wait to shoot it. Really excited to see what the Buffalo Bore Dangerous Game ammo does to steel!

Default Shoulder holster

I prefer LEATHER. Costs more, wears and looks better. check EL PASO SADDLERY.

This nylon chest holster is called Crossfire Alaskan. I bought it about ten
years ago (for about fifty bucks then). Carried the model 29 (shown) with
4" barrel. Used it for one fishing trip, figured it would be about my last,
so I sold it here on the forum. It worked just fine.
I see you are fairly new here, so you should know that you can
hold your curser over the thumb nail photos and it will enlarge
them.

Big gun ..... to do "everything" you want ...... maybe a Bianchi X15 shoulder holster.

For most of my woods stuff it's a 3 or 4 inch in a Bianchi 111 Cyclone cross draw

I carry all my revolvers in a Simply Rugged Pancake holster. The gun is well covered/protected and the design keeps the gun in very close and snug against my side which is how I like it.

The only way I could carry a 6” M29 was in a Bianchi Cyclone #111 cross draw.

Shoulder holsters are too confining to the chest and shoulders to be compatible with fly fishing or hunting with a long arm. Chest holsters are equally clumsy.

Coals to Newcastle.... Concur with the Bianchi Cyclone 111. Found a used one in LH. Perfect for Ruger Redhawk 5.5" .41 Mag. Let alone for 6" and greater...

Don't know how to reconcile any holster very well if stream and waders in picture! (Realize this OT, but per scat photo, would also invest in a good pair of at least 6-8" boots.)

Default Used but new to me 629-6

Hello everyone,

It’s been a long time since I’ve been and wanted to say hello.
I found this thread and figured this would be the best thread to post rather than start a new one, since I need a holster for this beauty. Correct me I’m wrong. Anyhow, I recently found and purchased a used 629-6, but honestly think it’s never been shot other than the couple of rounds from S&W. I’d say I got a good deal but everyone’s definition would be different based on how badly they want it.
Posting a couple pics because I’m just stoked that I finally have.

Anyhow thanks for everyone’s previous posts on holsters. It’s helped a lot.

Welcome, Cisum! And congrats on your 629 purchase!

I don't carry anything that big, nor do I engage in the many activities that you do. But, I think, why limit yourself to one holster? Why not buy several specific — by which I mean suited to you — for the discrete activities in which you engage?

Probably also worth mentioning, as many have here, that holsters are kinda trial and error, and it takes a while, and some bucks, to find what works for you. You might look for used holsters, eBay, etc., to try some out.

Welcome and good luck!

I concur that holsters are a personal thing and your request is for recommendations. Personally, I don't have a model with that length of barrel for anything like your activities so I'll only recommend what I think would be suitable from my limited experiences. The Simply Rugged Sour Dough with Chesty Puller carry rig.
Now on to settle a life-long question for me. Your 2nd pic with a foot, etc. in the pic, was that in the woods???
