Default A better Smith & Wesson Leather Co holster fit chart G&G too

I've found a 1976 S&W holster fit chart that is much easier to read than the orange blobs from earlier years. I've added codes from Gould & Goodrich (G&G) catalogs that use the same system but include newer handguns such as the S&W L frame & 645, Ruger GP100 and Glock.

Then, as with Bucheimer, I've made a combined chart in word and pdf formats that is searchable for holster code numbers.
I left in the many numbers with no fit code attached. More may turn up later!!
This is not a chart for holster model numbers.

The chart numbers overlap to a dazzling degree with the same number used for Colt and S&W handguns of different frame sizes. S&W would shove revolvers as disparate as a K frame and Colt New Service into the same holster. So, the answer to the question "What does my holster fit?" may not be simple. The catalog charts also make no distinction for handguns with fixed or adjustable sights.

It is S&W Leather, so I've noted the appropriate S&W handguns first with Colt, Dan Wesson (DW), High Standard (HS) et.al. to follow. Multiple brands such as Taurus and Rossi are omitted for brevity. Apply the codes for similar S&W frame sizes.

The S&W holster marking system is similar to the pre-1980 Bucheimer system with the prefix B for black and end letters W for basket weave, CL for Clarino, C for carved. Blanks for brown and/or plain. The first number is for the holster model and the second number is the fit code.

The example given on the second page of the catalog is B 02 - 32 W

I'll try a few pages of the catalog. A little cleaner than usually seen.

Another 5 from the 1976 S&W Leather catalog. All familiar but I hope a little prettier.

And then the rest from the 1976 S&W Leather catalog. The previously posted fit charts make up the other pages.

I'll add the combined fit chart PDF again for posterity.

Default G&G and some history

Covers of the 1988 and 1992 G&G - Gould & Goodrich catalogs and that portable police radio fit chart I left out before.

Next we need a quick history of S&W leather and G&G.
OK ... Santa is late with the package, so here's my short summary to be replaced later with better...

After WWII, Wallace “Wally” Wolfram was a police officer and holster maker in New Mexico and then Monrovia, California -- where he was a friend to John Bianchi. He sold holsters under Wolfram, Wolf and Blazer brands and was also one of the makers supplying holsters to Colt. In the late 1960’s, a series of business transactions ended with the Wolfram Leather Company acquired by S&W to form the S&W Leather operation in 1969.

Holster designer Al “Kip” Kippen went from Heiser, to Colorado Saddlery, then to Bucheimer and then to S&W Leather.

S&W moved the holster company to Massachusetts and then North Carolina. In 1985, S&W sold the holster business to managers Robert Gould and Jon Goodrich – Gould & Goodrich Leather Company.

S&W holsters designs were a mix of all of the above with a few even labeled “S&W by Bianchi.”

A very good summary. G&G has been owned by Point Blank Ents. since 2017; Bob Gould stepped down at G&G in 2012 and it was his successor who sold to PB Ents.

Also worth noting that virtually the only way to distinguish a Blazer by Wally, and an S&W by that owner, and a Shoemaker is the maker's mark on the backside. Wally made the Colt-branded and S&W branded gunleather of the 1960s that is identical to his Blazer range, and Colt gunleather of other designs was made by Hunter, by Ojala of all people, and by Courtlandt; all of which have model numbers prefixed in Colt's catalogs/price lists with the maker's first letter (W,H,O,C).
