I have a 625 and a 686+ Mountain Gun and have been looking for a quality leather belt holster for each-was thinking a thumb strap would be a good idea. Does anyone have any recommendations?
Thank you in advance,

How can anyone know what would work for you without knowing what you want it for? Open carry in the city? Concealed (as much as possible) carry? Carrying for protection in the woods? With backpack on, or not? With any other items already on (such as bino harness), or not? Think about all of it and do some homework. There are plenty of great leather holster makers but too many styles and options to make any recommendations without knowing anything other than you want a leather belt holster, maybe with a "thumb strap."

Welcome, Dwenslen1. There are a lot of makers of leather holsters. Perusing this sub forum is a good way to get familiar with them.

In addition to Simply Rugged, you might check out El Paso Saddlery for some classic designs. I am a big Mitch Rosen fan, although his revolver offerings are probably getting limited. Kramer is a great maker of leather holsters. Milt Sparks is another. As is Lobo Gun Leather.

There are a bunch!

Warm welcome to the OP. Assuming field use, or possibly open carry in an automobile or on 4wheeler, I have found that top break holsters are much quicker and easier to use than the ones with the leather strap, let alone the twisted thong around the hammer for retention.

Though I don’t have it by El Paso, their topbreak, lined holster, in neutral cant would work for me (have similar). Of course, there literally dozens of choices.

Hope you get some satisfaction in searching - and perhaps wind up unlike many of us who have half a bushel basket+ full of holsters that aren’t “quite right “. All best.

I recommend the Bianci Cyclone 111 cross draw for speed, ease of carry and not interfering with other gear such as a knife, water bottle, or other gear you carry on the belt.

The M27 and M29 are very large handguns. The 6” (or the 6 1/2”or the 8 3/8”)barrel guns are particularly unsuited for carrying any other way than the cross draw.

One finale thing is the thumb strap: you don’t need a thumb strap! If you can do a front roll and the gun doesn’t fall out of the holster, it’s plenty secure without a thumb strap.

MG holster

At least for your N Frame 625, I can recommend this Double Diamond Chest holster shown carrying my 625 MG. I wore it as a backup recently to my Marlin Guide Gun on a black bear hunt. It's comfortable and satisfied my Walter Mitty delusion.

I’ll tag along with Rpg’s recommendation regarding an excellent field holster offering excellent protection for your revolver, security against loss and comfort ... the Bianchi 4001 Cyclone II in size #4. I’ve used this arrangement for years on my Mountain Gun and couldn’t be happier. They are conventional, strong side holsters with a snap closure and made of a reinforced nylon (I’m guessing) that I’ll describe as semi-stiff.
My only bad news is they are no longer in production but due pop up on the Bay from time to time.
Welcome from Colorado and good luck with your research and purchase!

Take a look at the Galco vertical shoulder holster system with the off-side speed loader carrier. If you are at least medium height and less than XXL sideways it will conceal under a mid-weight unbuttoned shirt. Also possible to draw from this position wearing rain gear. I carried a 629 Mountain Gun in one for over 20 years in Alaska and it was both comfortable and durable. After much experimenting, I concluded the Galco beat out both strong side pancake and forward raked thumb-break holsters for all-round use. Second best was a custom Trailrider straight drop thumb-break worn on the strong side set just barely behind the hip.
