It was a name given to the little noise a gun would make when
drawn from it's kydex holster, but I believe it is now used for the
noise any holster makes when the gun is drawn.

If you would like to know more, go up to the Search function and
type in The snick has a holstory. It is a thread mainly by Red
Nichols, who is an authority on such matters.

Walter and Truckman: I suppose it could be both. It could be the noise
made by the clicking off of the thumb safety on the 1911, and the draw
from the holster. The are both usually done simultaneously.

So my hazy recollection is that "the Snick" was about the first thermoplastic (kydex?) holster to be successfully made and marketed. Out of SoCal. Sensational at the time. Very fast. Was a thing in the late 70's. But gun people in the main are pretty conservative, and back then folks were slow to carry a pistol in anything but a leather holster. There were also reports of the plastic cracking/splitting, and the Snicks faded from view. But that is just my recollection, and I could be wrong.

"Snick" was the sound the holster made when the pistol was drawn from the early Kydex holsters.
One of the safety requirements for shooting IPSC matches (about 25 years ago) at our range was to perform a backward role to insure the pistol did not fall out of your holster.
The "Snick" holsters would fail that test almost every time.

I do believe that it is the term long used for the sound of a folder knife being opened but, more specifically, the sound of a switchblade being opened. It is far more pronounced than any sound made by the sound of a safety coming off a pistol, assuming it even makes a sound beyond a tiny click. Maybe the sound of a gun being drawn from Kydex reaches the level of a snick nut, to my ears, it's much louder. But I can't think of a word to describe it except the OBVIOUS SOUND OF GUN BEING DRAWN. :D
