Suspenders
Well...,I think the time has come for me to get some suspenders. As much as I hate to admit it I am getting older and this past weekend noticed that I was pulling my pants up more than normal. Wearing my Shield 45, one mag reload, knife, phone, radio, wallet and various keys is getting heavy anymore (thank goodness for cargo pants!) I'm not a big person by any means and don't have much of a belly but guess my butt is getting smaller, as well as my hips I guess. I always wear a white t-shirt tucked in to the pants with a short sleeve (summer) or long sleeve over shirt over that.
Anyway, I've read quite a few on here use Perry Suspenders. My belt (which I use everyday) is a Bullhide double thick 1.5" wide. I was looking at the Ruf-N-Tuf suspenders on their website and like the fact that they clip right to the belt. Does anyone know if their clips for the belt fit double thick belts? I've emailed them already but figured here would be a good place to hear some real world experience. Also, do persons here prefer the 1.5" or 2" width?
Thanks in advance for any insight. Boy, this kind of post seems to be most humbling...

I started wearing them (2'') a few months ago. Outside of shirt if just normal occasions, under the shirt for more serious occasions. When I say shirt most times I'm talking about a pocket tee shirt!.
Being most times I'm carring a LCR.38 in a pocket holster I adjust the heaver side a little. Had both of my sons and wife check me out and they say all looks good.

I wear Perry Suspenders. Perrys also clip to the belt. Works on thick belts but takes a little more effort to clip to the belt at first. The plastic clips will strengh after use and will take less efforts to clip to the thick belt.

Mine clip to both my Beltman dual layer bullhide and my Ted Blocker gunbelts. Helps with the weight.
P.S. Over the tucked in shirt and under the cover shirt works fine.

Have been wearing suspenders for quite awhile. Now they are worn under an untucked over shirt, and on top of an undershirt. Combined with a hybrid holster, very effective at spreading out the weight comfortably. Am using the cheap heavy duty ones from Farm and Fleet with heavy duty alligator clips and minimum stretch in the back. Eventually they do wear holes in the leather belt.
Even more comfortable is pocket carry in overalls. Of course am very fashionable, and yuppies tend to avoid me.

The fashionistas will tell you never wear belts and suspenders together. Found out the last time I bought a suit.

The last time I wore suspenders was when I was around 3 or 4 years old. No love loss for them.

Some people hate suspenders. I hate belts. By the time you have a belt tight enough to do any good, they’re tight. Especially I’d you’re loaded down with all that stuff Buzz is carrying. Gravity is undefeated. Belts don’t pull themselves up; Suspenders do.
When you carry a load, You need load bearing equipment. Recently, my friend at the local gunshop practically gave me one of those undershirts with the pockets sewn under the arm. I put my SIG 365 (12 rounds, who need as second mag?) under my left arm, wallet under my right. That set-up isn’t practical for every day. It’s an option.
If the fashion police don’t like your suspenders with a belt, they’re probably the same guys who’ve never had their hands dirty. Working men wear suspenders.

I like Carhartt Suspenders. I attach them to my belt and the belt loops hold the 1 1/2-inch Lobo Gun leather belt in place. With a cover shirt it works well for the 645 and 5906TSW. Also for the SIG P220 but that is not much of a challenge. At the age of 79 the suspender image does not bother me; I know I am a grown up.

Been wearing suspenders for a couple of years now, the kind that form an X in the back. The Y type (which I think look better) tend to pull the middle of the seat of my pants up and wive me a wedgie. With a belt. Suspenders clip to pants waist band.
Not very stylish but I am getting too old to worry as much those sorts of things like I used to.

Thanks for all the replies! Even though I'm not 79, yet, I haven't really cared about fashion since middle school, as my wife can attest to...

Well, I must be fashion Non P.C. A good belt, with Perry's suspenders works like a charm, when carrying. Ask any secret service officer. Added I use their 1.75 width.

Was wearing suspenders well before ever carrying concealed, and wore them on the outside of tucked in shirt. To make sure no one confused me with someone who gave a cluck, they were alligator clipped to belt.
Now that am using them to carry concealed, the cover shirt covers them up. Am prone to sewing on extree belt loops to keep holster/extra mag in place. Also sew some padding onto the suspenders where they go over my pace maker. Can support 5 in 1911 and 2 extra mags with winter flannel on.

Suspenders have clips
Braces attach to buttons.
I use braces. Especially when hiking or working in the woods where I most usually have a holstered handgun.

I have several sets of suspenders from these nice folks. I buy them in person at the National Finals Rodeo (they have a booth), but they appear to also sell online.
I like them because they clip to my pants through the belt loops instead of using the alligator jaw clamps.
And they have a fun name....

I'll wear a belt and suspenders if I want. Anyone who doesn't like it can wander in a random direction to urinate. My pants, I'll hold them up how I want.

And by using alligator clips on leather belt the support locations are optional/adjustable and weight distributed more better. Plus you are easily distinguished as someone who doesn't give a cluck.

Amazing a dispute over something like surrenders.
At least its a different subject than the normal 9MM Vs .38 or 30.06 Vs .308.

I have gotten to the no butt, pants won't stay up stage of my life. actually been there for some time. I got really tired of hiking up my pants all the time so very recently purchased a set of suspenders to give them a try. I purchased Hikers brand that clip to the belt loops. These things are great although I am still somewhat self-conscious about wearing them out in public. Guess I don't want to be old yet! Wearing them as I write this over an undershirt and under an over shirt. They can also be worn on bare skin under an untucked T-shirt.

I got the standard Perry’s 1.5 inch suspenders. They fit perfect and feel great. I’m very impressed. I’ll have a heavy gun carry report this weekend

I don't like Perry suspenders. Whenever I drop my trousers, often the clips will slip off of the belt & trying to re-attach them while you are wearing them can be frustrating at times.
I wear the clip-on suspenders from Wal-Mart. Cost is $9. My doctor told me that with my fluid on the heart problem, tight belts aren't good for me.

I have used 2-3" heavy suspenders a lot over the years.
When In the Ironworkers, just my work belt with two bags, spud/sleaver bar holder, and cresent wrench clip, weighed in at five pounds, without the tools.
My lightweight "Rod" belt came in at three pounds.
They will do a good job of holding my pants up but they will wear out or
have a clip fail, over time, with heavy revolvers.
I'm at the age and shape, where a belt, just does not work to hold things up, any more.

God saw fit to build me backwards- no butt, big stomach so without a belt and suspenders in short order my pants would be around my ankles even without a shootin iron hanging off my belt.
Perry’s clip ons solved the problem. I have the narrow ones for dress and wider ones for play.

I'm 75 and have been using suspenders off and on for years. The only real downside is if you happen to be away from home and nature calls. You can figure out how that might get complicated.

Do they get in the way of a 1.5 inch belt?

I have needed suspenders since in my 70's and never liked the look. My gun pulls my belted pants down or I tighten the belt to the point the gun hangs up. Never thought of wearing suspenders under a t shirt, or that they made suspenders specifically for that purpose. Just ordered a pair

I did the wal mart shuffle with suspenders for the first time yesterday with J frame in the rf pocket. There is a marked improvement in pants staying up! And I don’t have them cranked down all the way. Nice amount of preload on the adjusters. I’m very happy

With my distended abdomen, once grabbity gets ahold of my pants, even with a belt, they are going down to the floor. I wear the Upfitter suspenders with the belt loop clips, 2 in front and one in back when I am pocket carrying. When I choose to go with a IWB or OWB holster, I wear a 1.5" gun belt to more firmly hold the holster plus the suspenders to keep everything from trying to slide down towards the floor.

Well, this thread pushed me to re-visit suspenders. I had a pattern for a rig meant to carry a camera. It has side straps to which a person can clip gear. I made the whole rig, with a couple of small modifications, and I've been wearing them for about a week now. No side straps but I kind of like them.
I'll now make another set without the big back piece and no side straps, but this one is kind of fun.
And the pictures...

And who listens to them!. I always wear suspenders and a belt. I need a belt for my cell phone holster if nothing else. I carry my firearm either in pants pocket or an IWB concealable holster. In either case it adds weight and tends to pull my pants down. As I started getting older I started with suspenders. I weight and waist increased, but no hips. That's where the ladies have one on us, they have hips to help hold up pants. My job as a pharmacist requires some bending and kneeling, so I like my pants a bit on the larger, loose side, so suspenders really help..

After reading this thread I got a set of Perrys that connect to a belt. They have the plastic ends that slip under a belt.
They were for a specific fishing trip where I would be carrying my Ruger Gp100 for an extended period of time.
They really made it comfortable. Zero pants sag with zero need to readjust how the heavy gun and holster were hanging. My shoulders never really noticed the suspenders.

You guys really need to check out the Hikers Co. Upfitter that I posted about. They just clip to the belt loops. Super simple system. You don't have to deal with the clips coming off of your belt.

The Perrys model I selected does not have a clip, loop or any type of hookup in the back. Just two attachment points on the front.
I chose the Perrys model because many of my favorite outdoor pants have a very wide back belt loop on the back. A clip such as the Hikers will not work on this design. Many other types of clamp are not very well designed for this type of pants either.

This discussion reminds me of my first experience in full uniform gear as a young cop and in desperate need of a restroom break. Sam Browne belt, holster, ammo pouch, handcuff case, nightstick, belt keepers to keep the Sam Browne attached to the trouser belt, all the other stuff that gets in the way of a nice peaceful rest stop in the middle of a shift.
Suspenders, braces, whatever we call them can only get in the way under genuine emergency situations in unfamiliar places and awkward times.
But I suppose it just "DEPENDS" on what works for you.

Still good...even though I am 60 years older now!
Hell.....that web gear worked pretty darn well in 1966 I can tell you...even with a M1911A1, holster and bayonet & scabbard attached.
I don't feel the need any longer to carry the bayonet, scabbard or the ammo pouches but the first aid packet, can still ride along.
The old Nam era web gear is still pretty cheap at surplus stores, the more modern stuff not so cheap but either way your belt works, your pants won't fall down, you can distribute the weight of what you want pretty much where you want ....BUT....
You will most likely have a fashionista problem in public, especially if you top off this rig with a old Nam era boonie hat, maybe that old pair of fatigues...(no problem for me....haven't been able to fit in them for decades)

I wear suspenders with a suit and I'm slim built, it's a style "thang".
I have some really cool alligator leather suspenders to go with my alligator dress shoes. And yes, you wear them with a belt if they're only for style.
Not my suspenders but an image of them offline.

I like "airport suspenders." They have no ferrous metal in them and very little metal of any kind. Will not set off metal detectors. They use a very nice wide plastic clip that holds onto even fairly thin fabric very nicely. About 1" wide. For heavy duty (range) use I use 2" wide button-on suspenders. Red. They see me coming.

Best place to shop suspenders:
Suspenders for Men, Women, and Kids | SuspenderStore
They carry everything suspenders. I have bought from them many times without issue.
I have never had any associations with this company.
