New In Box, unfired, mint condition, with original papers and tool kit.
This gun is from the very first run of 2-1/2” Model 686 revolvers ever made, a special order in 1984 of approximately 2500 guns for Lew Horton Distributors under product code 104212 (refer to Supica/Nahas’ “Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson,” Third Edition, page 270). These original 686 Compact guns were equipped with a red ramp front sight, white outline rear sight, stainless trigger and hammer, round butt, and smooth finger-grooved Smith & Wesson combat stocks made of Goncalo Alves wood.
This revolver comes complete with the original numbered-to-the-gun box bearing the above mentioned product code, and includes the factory spec sheet/parts list, safety/inspection manual, rust-inhibiting S&W gun-wrap paper, tri-fold inner box with plastic trigger guard thimble, and proper unopened .38/.357 short barrel tool kit containing a looped aluminum cleaning rod, a bore brush, a bore mop, and the traditional S&W screwdriver.
Save for a barely perceptible turn line, this gun is in perfect, mint, unblemished condition.
As you may know, in 1987 the Smith & Wesson factory issued a recall of all “no dash” and -1 L-frame revolvers (models 581, 586, 681, and 686) for the installation of an improved hammer nose, bushing, and associated parts. This factory modification was implemented due to issues related to the use of only the most powerful of .357 Magnum cartridges. Affected revolvers so modified are stamped in the yoke with an “M” in the area of the model number stamping.
This factory “M” modification has not been performed on this gun. It is exactly as it left the factory in 1984. I’ve heard, anecdotally, that the factory still performs this modification at customer request, free of charge, including the cost of shipping to and from the factory, but I have not confirmed this. I’ve intentionally preserved this gun as unfired, unmodified, and completely factory original. Any decision to ship the gun to the factory for the “M” modification will be left to the next owner.
Price is $750 shipped to your FFL. USPS money order or personal check.
