None other than the "Detroit Police" stamp on the backstrap and a equipment number (17657) stamped on the bottom of the grip. Picture 2 and picture 4 show the "Detroit Police" stamp. It was purchased just as you see it , no box and no paperwork. SN is 5857J putting production at 1972. Thanks for looking.

Thanks for adding the picture. As you can see from your photo there is a equipment number on the bottom of the grip. Hmmm... wonder if its 17657. You can order a letter from Colt but it is rather expensive to do so. It is the only way to authenicate a Colt. But as you say its a known fact that Detroit ordered both these 5" Colts and Model 10s in Nickel and they all were stamped in this way.
