My 32 gal. drum of #9 is about to run out?
(Just kidding on the 32 gallon drum!)
But I'd love to get the input of the Forum on whether I should stay with my trouble free Hoppe's #9 which I'm about to run out of, or switch to a "tastes great, less filling" variant?
(BTW: The "tastes great, less filling" callously ripped off from Erich)
Opinions?
THANKS!

If it ain't broke, don't fix it! Besides where can you find a solvent with an odor that conjures up old times like #9 does.

Hoppes # 9 smelled best and worked even better back when it had nitrobenzine as an ingredient. I remember after they dropped the nitrobenzine I bought a large economy size bottle of the old stuff that I would use to refill my smaller bottle with.
It may have been more toxic with the nitrobenzine but I sure wish you could still get the good stuff.

Google the name "Ed's Red", a home made blend of ATF Dexron II, kero, mineral spirits, and acetone. I've been using this for years and it cleans like no other juice on the shelves. About $!0 a gallon when made. Follow the precautions posted with the recepie (ventilation, keep off wood finished, etc.) and I think you will be happy with it's effectiveness. Another friend of mine is a long time bench rest shooter with very expensive barrels and uses nothing but 50/50 Mobil 1 and kerosene. I have not tried this one though.

My Wife did say once it was the only after shave she ever could recall on me! I guess your right, ain't broke and all? It's certainly never done a lick of finish damage, melted plastic or wrecked any Tritium sights?

I still use #9 in a glass jar for soaking things, but I've switched to the Hoppe's Elite for general gun cleaning. Works just as well, and no odor.

Hell; I've been using Hoppes for deodorant for over 50 years. Guess it works 'cause I've been married 3 times. LOL.

I read the title and thought of #9 shot. Wish I had a 32 gallon drum of shot.

The only thing that smells better than #9 is G96 gun treatment and paper shotgun shells.
I use Sweets 7.62 for copper fouling but #9 for everything else smokeless

Another vote for Hoppe's Elite. I've used #9 for about 50 years but my boy gave me a squirt bottle of Elite. It definitely cleans better and faster.

I use Hoppe's #9 for my semi-autos, and dad uses Hoppe's #9 + (or something like that) for his black powder stuff.

I also love the smell of #9 and the memories it evokes. It's still a pretty good product but lately I have been using Pro Shot's 1 Step. It seems to be an excellent cleaner/lubricant.
