New Land Speed Record In WYOMING
Lat night our own Mike Kelley (KKG) and Bride Susan were our house guests here in Wheatland, WY.
About 8AM they departed for Cody, WY and then to Boise tomorrow.
At noon today I received a call from Mike in his 1996 Ford Areostar Mini Van from Buffalo, WY. The van has 176K miles and a seeedometer that pegs out at 90MPH.
One of our HP troopers got a hit off of his rear radar antenna at 106 MPH. He immediately pulled over the Perps and obtained all of the pertinent required data. Aft er explaining to the officer that the vehicle was incapable of that speed unless it was rolling off of a cliff the officer ran the plates and registration, explained he had an emergency call else where, please have a nice day and sped off back south...hopefully to get his radar checked.
Mike and I are both retired LEOs and have been patrol officers...literally
in another century...but thought all of the LEO guys/gals past and present would get a chuckle out of this one.
Still and all, My Hat is off to the Wyoming HP. They do the best they can with what they have. They are a great bunch of guys and gals and I am proud to know them.

That's funny.
He doesn't have an account here anymore, does he?
Or am I thinking of someone else?

Andy,
He is here, but under a new moniker...I think.
Not sure what his problem was/is, didn't bug him about it. Just thought that the LEOs would get a kick out of the traffic stop.

Howdy All from Cody;
I'm now signed on as #1805; which is my S&WCA Member Number. I rejoined when the Association and the Public Form merged.
I have all the respect in the World for all LEOs who are out there doing a very tough job. But, I'm just not sure I could have walked up to an old Aerostar Van and asked the driver what his Rush was since I had 'clocked' him on my Radar doing 106MPH especially, while he was on an up-hill grade!!!
I will admit that I think he had to have been a bit 'embarrassed' about making the stop because when he took off to his "Emergency" and crossed the median strip with his "Yellows" on and headed back South Bound, I never did see his Reds & Blues come on and he didn't seem to be in much of a hurry!
I know "things" can change in an instant but if "my" Emergency had ended that quickly and I really felt I had a Speeder that was guilty of doing 106MPH; well, I would have been back on him like 'Stink on Stuff', if you know what I mean.

Speeds are an interesting thing. Like when Algore's never-do-well son was clocked doing something like 130 in a Prius (like father like son.) You can't give him a ticket, his bloated daddy is famous.
Anyway, I constantly complain about my lack of horsepower in my jeep. Its not all that bad, but between gearing and engine tune (hard tune, as in cam profile), it gets awful gas mileage at 70 or so. I just grumble and put the cruise on 58.
One year going west thru Colorado, I think it was down by Frisco, I just commented I should do what the truckers do, 90 down hill so they can go 40 back up the other side. My wife, always one to disparage both me and my Jeep, laughed and said "it won't do 90." Bad mistake. The next sound she heard was the FLAP of my foot trying to push the go pedal thru the floorboard. No one was around (I prefer to travel at night when there is less traffic.) Yep, it'll do 93 down hill, and hold it across the flatland. Of course at the first hint of an upgrade or headwind, its down about 10 mph pretty quick. And yes, I was still wound out in 3rd, with the engine trying to eat itself half way up the other side - at about 50.
Anyone tells me it'd do 106 would get laughed at. No way.

The Doppler frequency shift is known to increase exponentially when bouncing off out-of-state plates.

I usually run across two types of drivers in my travels.
First group claims their vehicle "won't go that fast." "That fast," of course, is usually whatever speed they were clocked.
Second type raves about "how fast" their ride is. They're usually driving some '73 Ford hoopty that they know is capable of 160!
Hmmmm...
Be safe.

Got stopped just outside Sheridan awhile back and the Trooper was very nice and professional. When I looked down at the speedometer I was doing about 90 or so and figured I should slow down a bit. Looked back up and there he was with the lights on.
Pulled over gave him my DL and Mil ID.
He said you were going a little fast weren't you.
I said yes sir.
He said slow down as you are going way to fast. I said Yes Sir.
I said how fast?
He said if I tell you I have to give you a ticket.
I said I don't want to know how fast I was going anymore. I'll slow down to the speed limit.
He said good and off I went.
Most officers are great guys and gals. We are extremely lucky to have the level of professionalism in our LEOs that we do. To all LEOs Thank you!

Wyoming HP troopers are great people. They work long hours to keep people that travel in Wyoming (both residents and visitors) safe.
Welcome Chop to the forum.
Welcome #1805 to Cody.

Honest to God, the following is true. One of my best friends name is REALLY John Law! He once pulled over a old guy and gave him a ticket. The old boy cussed him out saying, "Ya aint even got the guts ta sign yer real name!

Sasaberanger, thanks for the welcome. I work at the Yellowstone Park HQ in Mammoth. Been here just over a year. Not sure how I ended up in Wyoming but I think I work in the most beautiful place. The Elk have just started their rut so there are tons of them around this week.

Several years ago I had the wife's Grand Caravan showing about 110 heading from Nebraska to SD. I was late for a hunt as I had to stop at a chiropractor. Had no idea it would go that fast. Never did tell her.

I got to travel through Wyoming going to and from Alaska. Did not get to spend any time to see the sights. We went for a Moose hunt and drove from texas to Alaska to do it. (Couple of bored GI's with over 30 days of leave saved up). Well, my F-150 was giving me trouble and I was almost out of my warranty period. So the light over my head goes on and we disconnected the speedometer cable so I could turn the truck in for repairs when we got home. And you guessed it, got pulled over once Wyoming. Trooper was very courteous, and asked if we had an emergency. No I replied truthfully, just trying to get back to Fort Hood. He told us to drive safe and left us. I am glad he did not ask if I knew how fast we were going because my answer would of been "TO THE FLOOR BOARD"!!!

My 1988 Mustang GT with all the upgrades would only do 85.. I got stopped on the interstate NY /Ct border a few years ago, Trooper said I was doing over 100 I told him I was only doing 85... he laughed and said Yea right ....I told him at least thats what the Speedo said.. (It only goes to 85). He looked at the dash ....... went back to his car and ran my plates and checked me out..... came back handed me my license and told me to keep it below 65....

My uncle talked his way out a ticket that way once. He was coming into OKC in an old, beat-up Chevy Luv. He was clocked at about 75 or something. He just looked at the officer and asked, "Does this thing look like it'll go that fast?" The officer agreed and admitted "the radar gun might not be quite warmed up yet."
