Super Deer picture
A friend in the upstate of SC sent me this picture he took in his backyard last week. I've not see 2 bucks, a doe. a new fawn and a rabbit together before. This is not a 'shopped image' (he has a hard enough time sending emails). His property backs up to a wooded preserve with a big creek, so they have lots of places to hide. Told him to save this one cause he will not see that again.

That's the beloved "Swamp Rabbit" known to all in the upstate. The namesake of trails, hockey teams, railroads, and all manor of things around these parts.

I had a pair of beagles growing up and a Remington 870 20 gauge. I bet if you measured the miles we chased big swampers, and laid them end-to-end you could reach Jupiter, maybe Neptune or Pluto. I read Peter Hathaway Capstick by flashlight under the covers well past my bedtime. But if you had given me a choice of a swamp rabbit hunt over a fine, matched pair of beagles, or a big African Safari, I am afraid I would have stuck with my beagles.
40 years later I would give the same answer—doubly so now after all the years.

I am somewhat confused by this picture. Since there is a fawn in the picture it should be from late Summer. However the bucks look like they're in velvet!

I raised beagles for many years. I will agree with you 100%. We hunted deer and rabbits and nothing beats the sound of a pack in pursuit

Saw a doe with two small fawns this morning and a little later a 4 point in velvet. All while walking the dog.

I did the bulk of my deer hunting in the upper Midwest and never saw a deer this late in the season in velvet. I guess things work differently in the South where this was taken.

bucks and fawns
Spotted fawns and bucks in velvet are typical in July in SC. Our deer season opens Sept. 1, and 20% will still be in velvet.

Great photo.
Here the fawns still have there spots and the bucks are still in velvet.
Missed a great photo op the other day. Mule deer buck in velvet standing by the steps to the county courthouse munching on the shrubbery. Yesterday the wife and I watched twin spotted fawns convorting in the grass by mom. Maybe 25 yards away. The fawns would take off in a short sprint, hopping and twisting sideways, while mom grazed away. We have lots of urban deer. There are 2 bunches of mulies one on the hill on east side of town, the other on the west side hill and the rest of the town is sprinkled with batches of whitetail as the creek meanders through town. The courthouse is on the slope of the west side hill.
Where I live there is a bunch of whitetails that hang out. I have a small spot on my place that is blocked from most of the world by my shop, storage shed and a big row of lilacs, one of the whitetail does keeps her fawn back there every year and I don't mow back there until about now.

Ok: I understand what you're saying about velvet n your areas but just when do they shed it? I've always been of the opinion that antlers don't harden until it's shed so this would be a real problem during the rut!

Rut around here doesn't happen until around mid November. Lots of time left for growth and velvet shed.
