I'd like to share a great day that I had with my son and daughter-in-law recently. Ben is an Army medic, in the process of transferring from Honolulu (Trippler, where he met his new wife) to Langstall (sp?), Germany. He and Kim are staying with us for a couple of weeks while they're on leave and I convinced them to accompany "the old geezer" out to the range last weekend; she hadn't shot before. We tried a couple of hand guns with so-so results. Then I set out a few Bullzeye exploding targets and trotted out my Biathlon. After a couple of near misses she ran 4 straight ka-booms:
Her smile lit up the day. I think that I made a convert. Did I mention that Ben is a lucky kid? -S2
Thats an Izmash Biathalon? Wow, I thought I was the only one here who owns one of those. What a great rifle, I absolutely love mine. They were made in 22 magnum as well.
For those of you who don't know, it has one of the strangest bolt actions you'll see, more like a toggle than anything. You pull back on the toggle and a hinged arm pulls the bolt back, ejects the empty then chambers another round when you push it back forward. I can cycle the action with just 2 fingers. and the rifle shoots very small groups at 100 yards.
I have one too, but mine's not checkered. It's very accurate: with a 10X scope on it it still shoots beter than I can hold. The mechanism is like a Luger laid on its side. It's not really a biathlon rifle, but probably the sporter version of one; real biathlon rifles don't seem to be advertised, or even listed in the Gun Digest anual.
Some of my happiest memories of being a kid were going to the range with the relatives... Heck, even now, I like to go to the range with at least one or two of them, since they all shoot better than I do.
